Exploring both secular and theological interpretations of evolutionary history, this new interpretation hinges on the similarities between individual redemption and the eschatological story of cosmic redemption as mediated by the Holy Spirit throughout evolutionary history. This new lens is then applied to relevant questions raised by the evolutionary process (especially suffering), and helps overcome the current shortcomings of contemporary interpretations of evolutionary history.
Many books aim to help beginners explore whether or not evolutionary science is compatible with Christian faith. This one probes more deeply to ask: What do we learn from modern evolutionary science about key issues that are of special theological concern? And what does Christian theology, especially in its Reformed expressions, say about those same key issues? Gijsbert van den Brink begins by describing the layers of meaning in the phrase “evolutionary theory” and exploring the question of how to interpret the Bible with regard to science. He then works through five key areas of potential conflict between evolutionary theory and Christian faith, spelling out scientific findings and analyzing Christian doctrinal concerns along the way. For all of human history, humans have used large stories (grand narratives) to answer the big questions of life: who we are, why we exist, where we come from, and where we are going. When understood as an unfolding narrative, evolution offers a large story of the universe, and humanity’s place in it. However, understanding evolution as an unfolding narrative raises all sorts of significant theological questions concerning creation, evolution, suffering, and the role of God and his redemptive work in it all. Many have attempted to make sense of evolutionary history by offering either naturalistic or theological explanations. This particular project analyzes some of the most prominent of these interpretations, and eventually aims at increasing our insight into the potential of the Christian theological paradigm to provide a convincing soteriological interpretation of evolutionary history. It does so by focusing on the role of pneumatology as a necessary complement to existing patrological and Christological accounts.
In God After Darwin, eminent theologian John F. Evolution, Chance, and God looks at the relationship between religion and evolution from a philosophical perspective. This relationship is fascinating, complex and often very controversial, involving myriad issues that are difficult to keep separate from each other. Evolution, Chance, and God introduces the reader to the main themes of this debate and to the theory of evolution, while arguing for a particular viewpoint, namely that evolution and religion are compatible, and that, contrary to the views of some influential thinkers, there is no chance operating in the theory of evolution, a conclusion that has great significance for teleology. One of the main aims of this book is not simply to critique one influential contemporary view that evolution and religion are incompatible, but to explore specific ways of how we might understand their compatibility, as well as the implications of evolution for religious belief.
