The work of Michael Oakeshott has retained a striking currency in philosophical discourse about education. This is hardly surprising in view of his influence on Paul Hirst and Richard Peters, two philosophers whose work had an enormous impact on educational thinking and practice in the English-speaking world. And, although much of the detail in educational debate may change, the fundamental underlying concerns regarding the conception of the person, the nature of knowledge and the moral life and their expression in educational institutions and activities remain subject of disagreement. In the light of this continuing interest and of Oakeshott's extensive writing on so many aspects of education, it is timely that a book be published on his thinking on the subject.
Modernity, Community, and Place in Brian Friel’s Drama shows how the leading Irish playwright explores a series of dynamic physical and intellectual environments, charting the impact of modernity on rural culture and on the imagined communities he strove to create between readers, and script, actors and audience.
The northern waters hold dark secrets, ones Wax needs to uncover if he's going to get one step closer to the Wound and its throne. Before such lofty ideas can be set in motion, though, Wax and his guardians have to find a ride upriver, a task made harder thanks to cowardly captains and murderous fiends. Sly eyes and quick feet grab an unexpected opportunity to travel, but Wax soon finds their chosen vessel might have more danger than the rivers themselves. After surviving the Dark Below, Maena and Svarde are on the wrong wagon, heading straight to the Pits and gladiator justice. Whether they live or die will be up to more than their skills with a blade and an axe, as the enemies they'll face might very well be their own friends. Across the isles, meanwhile, the fiends grow stronger. Cities burn and desperation feeds a growing turmoil. Time is running out, for Wax and his quest, or Svarde and his promised slaughter. Even if they succeed, will there be anything left to save? The Wrath of Rivers continues the fantasy saga started with The Price of Peace, an action adventure tale brimming with vibrant characters, lush locales, and a story you've never seen before. Dive into the Seven Isles, and find yourself lost in a world as fun as it is ferocious.
The year is 1878. The widowed Christopher Gore, his son David and their housekeeper Margaret, the woman with whom they are both in love, live at The Lodge in Ballybeg. But in this era of unrest at the dawn of Home Rule, their seemingly serene life is threatened by the arrival of Christopher's English cousin, who unwittingly ignites deep animosity among the villagers of Ballybeg. The Home Place premiered at the Gate Theatre, Dublin, in February 2005.
Irelands of the Mind: Memory and Identity in Modern Irish Culture offers a compelling series of essays on changing images of Ireland from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. It seeks to understand the various ways in which Ireland has been thought about, not only in fiction, poetry and drama, but in travel writing and tourist brochures, nineteenth-century newspapers, radio talk shows, film adaptations of fictional works, and the music and songs of Van Morrison and Sinéad O’Connor. The prevailing theme throughout the twelve essays that constitute the book is the complicated sense of belonging that continues to characterise so much of modern Irish culture. Questions of nationhood and national identity are given a new and invigorated treatment in the context of a rapidly changing Ireland and a changing set of intellectual methods and approaches.
The book is organized chronologically, by political history, and then by theme; a great deal of space is devoted to archaeological history, art history, and architecture. Also discusses the physical nature of the city: how the art, the growth of the streets, and the politics all affected the city's appearance today. The history, mythology, art, and décor of significant mosques in the city are included. Contains about 800 pages of analysis, with a great number of photographs and illustrations.
