Excerpt from The Essentials of Histology: Descriptive and Practical for the Use of Students This Book is written with the object of supplying the student with directions for the microscopical examination of the tissues. At the same time it is intended to serve as an Elementary d104book of Histology, comprising all the essential facts of the science, but omitting unimportant details, the discussion of which is only calculated to confuse the learner. For a similar reason references to authorities have also been omitted. Most of the illustrations are taken from the second volume of Quain's Anatomy, ninth edition, where their authorship will be found acknowledged. Of the remainder, those which have been selected from other authors are duly indicated; the rest have either been drawn expressly for this work, or have been transferred to it from the authors 'Course of Practical Histology.' For conveniently accompanying the work of a class of medical students, the book is divided into forty-two lessons. Each of these may be supposed to occupy a class from one to three hours, according to the extent to which the preparations are made beforehand by the teacher or are prepared during the lesson by the students. A few of the preparations - e.g. some of those of the sense-organs - cannot well be made in a class, but it has been thought advisable not to injure the completeness of the work by omitting mention of them. Excerpt from The Essentials of Morbid Histology: For the Use of Students The arrangement, order and length of the lessons can naturally be varied to suit individual requirements, for there is no strictly logical sequence which can be adopted as a standard. Excerpt from d104-Book of Histology It has been impossible to accomplish this without some sacrifice of uniformity of treatment and of logical sequence. This is especially noticeable in the chapter on the nervous system, which has been made much fuller and more practical than is usual. The author's reason for the method of treatment there adopted and for the considerable amount of anatomy which this chapter contains is the apparent success the method has met with in the teaching of this always difficult subject to st ants. Excerpt from d104-Book of Histology: Including the Microscopic Technic This edition has been revised in accordance with the tenth German edition, and presents much that is new, both in revision of the former text and additions throughout the entire work. Among the most important changes are - Fifty new illustrations, a number in colors, and new color schemes of the Spleen, Lung, Kidney, and Retina. Five new chapters upon the following subjects: The Form of Glands, based on the investigations of Maziarski. The Urinary Bladder, based on the researches of Lendorf. The Seminal Passages, based on the researches of Felix. The Development of the Hairs, based on the author's own researches. There are, besides, many lesser alterations and additions, including the latest investigations on the Morphology of the Cell and the Structure and Chemistry of the Tissues; also the addition to the technical part of the application of Formol and its mixtures. The editor acknowledges gratefully the appreciation of Professor Stohr's work shown by many teachers and students, and trusts that this new edition may yet increase its usefulness. Excerpt from The Essentials of Pathology The object of this little book is to unfold to the beginner the fundamentals of pathology in a plain, practical way, and by bringing them within easy comprehension to increase his interest in the study of the subject. It is not, therefore, intended to supplant more pretentious works by allaying, but rather to lead up to them by kindling, a thirst for pathologi cal investigation. Some departures from the ordinary have been made in the arrangement of the work, but it is believed that they will conduce to a more thorough and easy under standing of the subjects treated. I have, in great measure, purposely avoided the discussion of unsettled questions, and have occasionally stated dogmatically that which admits of question. This has been done with a view to prevent con fusion in the mind of the student, and to impart clear-cut conceptions of the generally accepted doctrines of to-day. For the same reason I have avoided the slight detractions incident to bibliographical references, though, I fear, with questionable propriety. A very considerable experience in teaching, extending through some years past, leads me to hope that this effort will not prove barren of some good results.
