Excerpt from Astronomical Essays Historical and Descriptive The Secular Variation of Stars, The Number of the Visible Stars, and The Satellite of Sirius. The rest have not been hitherto published. For much of the information contained in the first three essays, and in N os. 7 and 8, I am indebted to Houzeau and Lancaster's Bibliographic Générale de i'astronomie, vol. I., Introduction. For the illustrations, my best thanks are due to Professor Barnard, B.se., of the Yerkes Observatory and to Dr. Max Wolf, of Heidelberg. Excerpt from The Poetry of Astronomy: A Series of Familiar Essays on the Heavenly Bodies Many think that science canfiot truly be called science if clothed in poetic garb, and, on the other hand, others seem to fear that a glory must depart from the face of nature if science scrutinise her mysteries too closely. I believe both these fears tobe unfounded that science need not be less exact though poetry underlie its teachings; while, beautiful and glorious though the ordinary aspect of nature may be, a deeper poetry, a more solemn significance, a greater beauty, and a nobler glory can be recognised in the aspect Of nature when science lifts the veil which hides it from the unaided vision. Nay, I believe that no one who studies aright the teachings Of the profoundest students Of nature will fail to perceive that our Galileos, Keplers, and N ewtons, our Priestleys, Faradays, and Tyndalls, have been moved in no small degree by poetic instincts, and that their best scientific work has owed as much to their imagination as to their reasoning and perceptive faculties. Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Origin and Progress of Astronomy To a treatise on astronomy founded on either of the two prin ciples above mentioned the followmg Work will, it is hoped, serve as a convenient introduction; it may be considered as holding an intermediate place with respect to the voluminous histories of M.M. Bailly and Delambre and, be it said, while acknowledging the merits of such as the elegant essay of Dr. Adam Smith, or that recently published in the Library of Use ful Knowledge, the very general outlines which have, occasion ally, been given of the origin and progress of the science. Excerpt from Problems in Time and Space: A Collection of Essays Relating to the Earth, Physically and Astronomically and Cognate Matters The following Essays form a collection rather than a series that is to say they are mutually independent of each other and may be read in any order. This necessarily results in some repetition when the subject-matter of one Essay trenches upon that of another. I have thought it preferable, however, that such repetition should occur, to such an extent as is requisite to avoid obscurity in relation to the subject specially dealt with, rather than that certain Essays should be mutually dependent.
