Drawing widely from contemporary social and critical thought, Making Things International 2 offers provocative interventions into debates about causality, connection, and politics through the notion of assemblage. Political assemblages, especially those that cross national borders, can be catalyzed by a host of surprising sparks. Present-day global systems are complex and interdependent, but the worn tools of traditional international relations theory are unsuited to the task of understanding how objects, ideas, and people come together to create, dispute, solve, or perhaps cause these political configurations. Contributors to this volume bring to their work a new sensitivity toward issues of power, authority, control, and sovereignty. The companion volume, Making Things International 1: Circuits and Motion, used things, stuff, and objects in motion to capture the material dynamics of global politics and to demonstrate the importance of the material. This volume builds on that conversation by examining objects that incite political assemblages. Specific subjects include fighter jets, smartphones, tents, HTTP cookies, representations of North Korea, and histories of the diplomatic cable, the orange prison jumpsuit, and container shipping. This volume surveys the crucial role of cities in shaping cultural exchange in early modern Europe.
A landmark in the study of early modern Europe, this two-volume collection makes available for the first time a selection of the most important texts from court and civic festival books. Festival entertainments were presented to mark such occasions as royal and ducal entries to capital cities, dynastic marriages, the birth and christening of heirs, religious feasts and royal and ducal funerals. Europa Triumphans represents the chronological and trans-European range of the court and civic festival. These festivals are considered not simply as texts, but as events, and are introduced by groups of scholars, each with a specialist knowledge of the political, social and cultural significance of the festival and of the iconography, spectacle, music, dance, voice and gesture in which they were expressed. To demonstrate the geographic spread and political significance of festivals, and to illustrate the range of aesthetic languages they deploy, the festivals included in these two volumes are grouped in the following sections: Henri III; Genoa; Poland-Lithuania; The Netherlands; The Protestant Union; La Rochelle; Scandinavia; and The New World. These texts provide many valuable insights into the variety of political systems and historical circumstances that formed them. Beautifully produced with 148 black-and-white and 23 colour illustrations, Europa Triumphans represents an invaluable reference source for the study of early modern Europe. In the past, our ideas of psychiatric hospitals and their history have been shaped by objects like straitjackets, cribs, and binding belts. These powerful objects were often used as a synonym for psychiatry and the way psychiatric patients were treated, yet very little is known about the agency of these objects and their appropriation by staff and patients. By focusing on material cultures, this book offers a new perspective on the history of psychiatry: it enables a narrative in which practicing psychiatry is part of a complex entanglement in which power is constantly negotiated. Scholars from different academic disciplines show how this material-based approach opens up new perspectives on the agency and imagination of men and women inside psychiatry.
Over the course of the nineteenth century, drastic social and political changes, technological innovations, and exposure to non-Western cultures affected Germany's built environment in profound ways. The economic challenges of Germany's colonial project forced architects designing for the colonies to abandon a centuries-long, highly ornamental architectural style in favor of structural technologies and building materials that catered to the local contexts of its remote colonies, such as prefabricated systems. As German architects gathered information about the regions under their influence in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific—during expeditions, at international exhibitions, and from colonial entrepreneurs and officials—they published their findings in books and articles and organized lectures and exhibits that stimulated progressive architectural thinking and shaped the emerging modern language of architecture within Germany itself. Offering in-depth interpretations across the fields of architectural history and postcolonial studies, Itohan Osayimwese considers the effects of colonialism, travel, and globalization on the development of modern architecture in Germany from the 1850s until the 1930s. Since architectural developments in nineteenth-century Germany are typically understood as crucial to the evolution of architecture worldwide in the twentieth century, this book globalizes the history of modern architecture at its founding moment.

Die frühneuzeitliche Leichenpredigt gilt - nach und aufgrund der eminenten Aufwertung der Gattung durch Martin Luther - in weiten Kreisen der Forschung als exklusives kulturelles Phänomen der protestantischen Territorien innerhalb des deutschsprachigen Raumes, das niemals ein entsprechendes Pendant in den Beerdigungs- und Totenehrungsritualen der katholischen Kirche gefunden habe. Tatsächlich aber ist - trotz aller einschlägigen Verbote der katholischen Kirchenobrigkeiten - eine bislang noch nicht genau quantifizierbare Menge an gedruckten katholischen Leichenpredigten aus dem 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert überliefert, wenn auch in der Überzahl an entlegenen und schwer zugänglichen Orten (zumeist in kirchlichen Privatbibliotheken). Ziel des Bandes ist es, jene über Jahrzehnte hinweg kolportierte Forschungsmeinung zu widerlegen und erste Ansätze zu einer Erschließung von katholischen Leichenpredigten der frühen Neuzeit zu liefern. In zwölf interdisziplinär breit gestreuten Studien werden die unterschiedlichsten druck-, sozial-, frömmigkeits-, rhetorik- und kunstgeschichtlichen Aspekte dieser Gattung katholischer Gebrauchstexte erstmals in den Blick der kulturhistorischen Forschung genommen. The Food Wheel is an "urban activator" proposed to be developed as a butterfly building, a light and movable pavilion which may activate temporary public space around the concept of food. It was conceptualized as a response to challenges experienced in connecting food, people and place during the development of the MKTplace project. MKTplace is a community-driven prepared food market and public space project that serves to activate vacant space in underserved neighborhoods by providing inexpensive incubator space for vendors and a venue for community events, arts and culture. Urban Prototyping seeks to adapt a Fabrication Information Modeling into the design and build prototyping of urban interventions. Furthermore, we aim to explore the spatial and urban implications where the role of civic engagement will propose a new method of architectural practice. The goal is to create an associative and collaborative environment that empowers designers to develop integrated fabrication concepts for the public realm.
