"1 Jind published lectures insipid. " ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT ta LOUIS AGASSIZ, January 15, 1840 Many things speak against the publication of lectures. The effect of the spoken word is very different from that of the written word. Repeated recapitulations, which help the listener under stand, are unnecessary, and the overtones of speech disappear in print. A lecture, particularly when not meant for beginners and not offered in preparation for a test, permits the privilege of subjective choice, and when published it is rightly open to criticism. So it has not been easy for me to determine to publish these lectures, which I have given in various forms in Gattingen and then again in Tiibingen. In the end, the deciding factors were the urging of my students, the encouragement of colleagues, many of whom I was delighted to see among my listeners, and the wish of my publisher, with whom I have enjoyed a friendly relationship for a long time. The final form of the text is basically a copy, and thus reallectures are the heart of it. If the lectures had not been taken down repeatedly, this book would not have appeared; 1 could not have undertaken a textbook-sized compilation of this material. With all the changes, the organization, the line of thought, and of ten the composition of the lectures themselves were retained. They may recall to my listeners of old the hours we spent together.
First multi-year cumulation covers six years: 1965-70.
First published in 1956, this book was considered the first comprehensive and unitary work on the subject since 1934. It provides an analysis of the relations between genetics and epigenetics, between genes and their effects. The book will be of interest to ebryologists, but also to more general biologists.
The early development of the mammalian embryo belongs to a period which, for the student, provides the particularly deep fascination connected with the processes of germination of the fIrst tender buds of life. Moreover, developmental biology encompasses a very large part of biology; if broadly dermed - almost all of it. The same is true for the fIeld of pathology if the manifold possibilities of disorders of the orderly arranged pathways of developmental processes are considered. Normal development in its earliest steps - and it would be diffI cult to see it otherwise - means the functioning of very intricate systems of complex inter dependent cycles controlled by structural, genetic, physiological and biochemical determi nants. However, disturbances interfering with them in their very different ways, can lead to fetal death, disorders of growth and differentiation, malformation and disease, sometimes as late as in the next generation or later. This is, indeed, the concern of the pathologist to whom and to whose interest in developmental pathology, this book is dedicated. The outlines of the present volume were conceived at a symposium on "Control of early em bryogenesis and factors responsible for failure of embryonic development" held May 1-4, 1974 in Travemtinde and sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Almost fIfty active participants attended this conference. At the time and in keeping with the purpose of the conference, publication of the proceedings was not envisaged.
The Selected Works of C. H. Waddington reissues seven titles from Waddington's impressive oeuvre. The titles in question cover a range of topics, from genetics and embryology to ethics in science and contemporary biological thought.
