This handbook is focused on the analytical dimension in researching ​international entrepreneurship. It offers a diverse collection of chapters focused on qualitative and quantitative methods that are being practised and can be used by future researchers in the field of international entrepreneurship. The importance of entrepreneurship for achieving economic growth in contemporary economies is widely recognized, both by policy makers and economists. It is deeply embedded in the current European policy approach that the creativity and independence of entrepreneurs contribute to higher levels of economic activity. Indeed, according to the European Commission (2003, p. 9), "The challenge for the European Union is to identify the key factors for building a climate in which entrepreneurial initiative and business activities can thrive. Policy measures should seek to boost the Union's levels of entrepreneurship, adopting the most appropriate approach for producing more entrepreneurs and for getting more firms to grow. " Audretsch (2003, p. 5) states that "Entrepreneurship has become the engine of economic and social development throughout the world. " The relation between entrepreneurship and economic growth is embedded in several strands of the economic literature. A first strand of literature involves the general understanding of the role of entrepreneurship in the modern economy. Seminal contributions were made by Schumpeter (1934), Knight (1921) and Kirzner (1973). These economists stress different aspects of the role of the entrepreneur. While Schumpeter stresses the innovating aspect, Knight stresses the risk assuming aspect. Kirzner, finally, stresses the role of the entrepreneur in leading markets to equilibrium. Acs (1992) discusses the contribution of small firms in modern economies.

In recent years an extensive range of new research has been revisiting the topic of the location of international business activities, from a variety of different perspectives and background interests. This work has been inspired in part by two apparently quite different but actually related contemporary trends: on the one hand, an emergence or revitalization of clusters of activities co-located in or around selected global city regions or fast growing metropolitan areas; and on the other hand, an increased global dispersion of activities conducted within the value chains managed or coordinated by many large multinational enterprises and their business partners. The former trend has given rise to discussions of how the elite of the cultural-cognitive economy of the 21st century (in Allen Scott's terminology) or the creative class (Richard Florida's term) are now being drawn or brought back to major urban centers; while the latter trend is associated with debates over outsourcing, and the economic and social consequences of shifts in the ownership and location of distinct nodes of value chains once production systems become more fragmented and the component parts of such systems become more geographically dispersed. An increased interest in the subject of international business location has been shown by scholars in Strategic Management, in Economic Geography, and in Regional Science, as well as in our own interdisciplinary field of International Business Studies. However, as is often the case in academic research communities, these bodies of scholarship have tended to develop at something of a distance from one another, each conversing internally more than they have with one another. Location of International Business Activities aims to promote a greater conversation between those interested in the topic of Location from various different backgrounds or starting points. The articles are taken from a special issue on the theme of the Multinational in Geographic Space which was published by The Journal of International Business Studies in 2013.
Higher employment, economic growth and innovation are fundamental objectives of modern economies. One effective means of attaining these goals is the development of successful entrepreneurs, and this book aims to provide a deeper, research-based understanding of the factors influencing successful entrepreneurship. "The main aim of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of the International Entrepreneurship field. Therefore, this work intends to improve the understanding of IE in several ways. Firstly, two theoretical studies are provided, which intend to be a contribution to the theoretical progress of the field. The first of these studies develops an classification of IE literature through bibliometric techniques. This type of studies allows the construction of a general image of a research field, while providing meaningful information to those who aspire to carry out IE research. The second study carries out a comprehensive review of the IE literature, which analyzes 272 articles related to IE. From the results are generated several discussions and recommendations to help overcome some of the difficulties presented in the field. In addition, a number of theoretical frameworks are compiled that should reduce the gaps between fields that originate the IE field. The second part of this thesis intended to improve the understanding of entrepreneurial internationalization in emerging economies. To do this, two empirical studies are carried out based on emerging Latin American countries, using two different research methodologies. In the first one, it is presents a comparative analysis of entrepreneurial internationalization, between two economically distinct contexts, namely Spain and Chile. From a logistic regression model, the role of human and relational capital of the entrepreneurs of both countries on the rapid internationalization of their ventures is explored. The results are different between countries, and are explained from the economic and socio-cultural differences of both countries. The second empirical study presents a retrospective case study of four Mexican new technology-based firms that were able to rapidly internationalize. These companies participated actively in different interactions/collaborations with other institutional agents, which allowed them to acquire knowledge and developed networks that were fundamental in their entrepreneurial internationalization. Through the Triple Helix Model, the main interactions observed in this study are explained. The experiences of these companies are a clear example of how interactions/collaborations between institutional actors in a given context are able to stimulate entrepreneurial activities, including international ones. This volume examines the theoretical and empirical landscape of social entrepreneurship in both non-profit and profit sectors.
