Feeling lost about how to treat disturbing intrusive thoughts? You're not alone! Cognitive behavioral therapy has been found to be incredibly effective in alleviating distressing symptoms, and also in leaving lasting effects on those who choose to utilize its methods. In studies comparing CBT to other psychotherapies, along with comparing to medication taken alone without any therapeutic intervention, CBT has shown a higher rate of success for a wide range of different mental health issues. Those with depression, anger issues, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and even eating disorders, have shown high rates of alleviation of symptoms if they put effort into learning the techniques taught to them and put those techniques to good use. While medication is a legitimate form of treating any sort of chemical causes for these disorders, most people who ever discontinue medication relapse shortly after, whereas those who have completed CBT still have the skills they need after completing their course of therapy. Now, this may sound too good to be true; how could such a relatively short therapy possibly be so effective at fixing mental health issues that can literally drive people to kill themselves or hurt others? The answer is that it gives control of the situation back to the person suffering. Oftentimes, our mental health issues stem from feelings of powerlessness or as if we are spinning out of control, and CBT aims to return the control of your mind back to yourself, rather than leaving it with your emotions. Emotions are irrational and easily swayed, so when we are ruled by emotion, we find ourselves struggling to find a stable the person learns how to understand how his or her thought process works, and just how much of a ripple effect even one small negative thought can have in nearly every aspect of life. By learning how even correcting one negative thought can create positive waves, the person learns to correct negativity throughout his or her life. The end result leaves a person coping with stress better than ever, leading to a drastic reduction in stress, depression, anger, anxiety, and any other symptoms that needed changing. This leaves the individual happier and more able to take on life. By empowering yourself with the knowledge of CBT, you make yourself self-sufficient. You learn the tools to solve your own problems on your own in ways that you can customize to your situation, and may even eliminate the need for any medication for your mental health issues. Keep in mind, however, that you should never wean yourself off of your medication without your doctor's guidance.CBT, despite being short and structured, has plenty of weapons in its arsenal.
