Beginning in October 2017, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized a set of workshops designed to gather information for the Decadal Survey of Social and Behavioral Sciences for Applications to National Security. The second workshop focused on emerging trends and methods in international security and this publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from this workshop.
Social networking focuses on social relationships (eg: friendships) diagrammed as nodes (points) and links (ties or edges between points). Social network analysis (SNA) examines features of such relationships within a social networking system, including how such social interactions change over time. SNA can measure and map connectedness or flow (eg: information, resources, etc.) within and across individuals, groups, and organisations. SNA can examine these ties in virtual- or geo-temporal spaces -- yielding rich mixed methods possibilities and wide application to a host of scientific phenomena. The advent of social media established a cultural meme that carries social network concepts to broader public audiences, and that reinforces SNAs path to be a powerful interdisciplinary approach. Google Ngram viewer shows the use of social network analysis in the corpus of books burgeoned in the late 1960s, and has continued to grow exponentially since the 1990s. The conceptual and methodological reach now extends both widely -- across scientific disciplines -- and deeply -- as field advances arise with the rapid pace of new inquiries.Facing this tremendous promulgation and diversification of SNA, this book distills essential frontiers across fields. Introducing emerging issues in the application of social network theory and SNA, and how these can or will be addressed, each chapter illuminates new trends or applications of a social network approach that can have wide potential impact in other disciplines. Conceptual advances (eg: applying the concepts of social networks such as peer influence on disease management and treatment adherence), as well as novel analytic approaches for studying properties of social networks are highlighted.
Highlighting the progress made by researchers in using Web-based surveys for data collection, this timely volume summarizes the experiences of leading behavioral and social scientists from Europe and the US who collected data using the Internet. Some chapters present theory, methodology, design, and implementation, while others focus on best practice examples and/or issues such as data quality and understanding paradata. A number of contributors applied innovative Web-based research methods to the LISS panel of CentERdata collected from over 5,000 Dutch households. Their findings are presented in the book. The book addresses practical issues such as data quality, how to reach difficult target groups, how to design a survey to maximize response, and ethical issues that need to be considered. Innovative applications such as the use of biomarkers and eye-tracking techniques are also explored. Part 1 provides an overview of Internet survey research including its methodologies, strengths, challenges, and best practices. Innovative ways to minimize sources of error are provided along with a review of mixed-mode designs, how to design a scientifically sound longitudinal panel and avoid sampling problems, and address ethical requirements in Web surveys. Part 2 focuses on advanced applications including the impact of visual design on the interpretability of survey questions, the impact survey usability has on respondents’ answers, design features that increase interaction, and how Internet surveys can be effectively used to study sensitive issues. Part 3 addresses data quality, sample selection, measurement and non-response error, and new applications for collecting online data. The issue of underrepresentation of certain groups in Internet research and the measures most effective at reducing it are also addressed. The book concludes with a discussion of the importance of paradata and the Web data collection process in general, followed by chapters with innovative experiments using eye-tracking techniques and biomarker data. Project Description: We envision a “smart” online discovery tool which helps users discover relevant information they did not even know existed-let alone how to find-which enables them to “learn things they didn't know they didn't know.” This highly interdisciplinary reference resource reviews and summarizes knowledge about key social and behavioral science topics and outlines emerging trends in specific fields. Moreover, by using hyperlinks, it dynamically directs users to other articles that bear directly on a topic of interest. The hyperlinks will create an intelligent multidimensional system of cross-referencing, leading users to consider a topic from multiple levels of analysis and from different disciplinary perspectives they may not have considered. Articles will be forward-looking in that each will only briefly review and summarize the current state of knowledge on a given topic, then focus on mapping emerging trends and identifying promising new lines of research. This new resource is especially timely given that increasing “spamming” and “gaming” of the Internet has led search engines such as Google to become increasingly less effective. This reference work will allow users to search efficiently and effectively within the social and behavioral sciences while promoting interdisciplinary understanding of individual topics. Features & Benefits: This project represents a unique collaboration between SAGE Publications and members of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University. A time where humans must learn quickly, and an era where the future is unpredictable, where choices for various conditions are increasing and mindsets are changing. The big challenge for educational institutions, especially Islamic educational institutions today, is how to prepare young people on various aspects of cognitive, mental, and spiritual preparedness to face the changing environment. Development in the real world is far more complex than what is learned in the classroom, so it is necessary to educate and transform curriculum that is directed in accordance with the demands of present times. The 6th International Conference on emerging trends in technology for education in facing VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) is designed not only to share research, but also to offer recommendations to governments, educational institutions and other stakeholders to improve the quality of education through technology-based educational programs. The conference was held by Faculty of Education UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Scholars, researchers, policy makers, teachers, and students from various countries participated and worked together to discuss how to improve the quality of education in the Muslim community. Guided by UIN Jakarta, the 6th ICEMS of 2020 provided opportunities for various educational stakeholders especially in Muslim Communities around the world to share their creative and innovative works, opinions, and experiences in open academic forums.
