Excerpt from Elements of Dutch Grammar The fifth edition of this book was almost entirely like the fourth, not so this sixth edition, which has indeed undergone such a good deal of alterations and enlargements as might make it appear to be quite a brannew work apart. Every part of the grammar has been thoroughly revised according to the wants and interests of the present day - A pretty complete list of Dutch proverbial and other expressions has been added, and at the end of the book the reader will be agreeably surprised in finding a sufficient number of English translations from pieces of the Chrestomathy (both prose and poetry) which all former editions stood in want of and for the composition of which I am indebted to my sister, Elisabeth Hoogvliet, teacher of the English language. My preface might end here, if I did not feel it incumbent on me, by a few words to express my thankfulness for those many flattering and encouraging signs of sympathy, which were sent to me by English and American readers of the 4th and 5th editions of this little book. From one of these letters, which is written in an agreeable witty style, and which procured me a great deal of pleasure in reading, I cannot help quoting a few passages here.
