Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Conic Sections and Algebraic Geometry: With Numerous Examples and Hints for Their Solution, Especially Designed for the Use of Beginners The first edition of this book was published shortly after the appearance of Dr Salmon's admirable treatise, with the hope that I could write a short and easy work upon a similar plan, without losing the obvious advantages of his harmonious and consecutive arrangement of the subject, Hence the Reduction of the General Equation of the Second Degree will be found to precede the discussion of the properties of the curves, and the Parabola is treated of after the Ellipse and Hyperbola; but I have arranged the chapter on the Reduction of the General Equation, so that a very small part of it will suffice, when the subject is read for the first time. My chief object was to write with special reference to those difficulties and misapprehensions, which I had found most common to beginners. In the later editions I have tried, without losing sight of my original purpose, to make the book suitable to the requirements of the time. The present edition has been carefully revised throughout. I have added a considerable amount of new matter, especially in the way of illustrative examples worked out. I have also changed the notation of the General Equation of the Second Order, to that used by Dr Salmon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
