Electrifying Indonesia tells the story of the entanglement of politics and technology during Indonesia's rapid post-World War II development. As a central part of its nation-building project, the Indonesian state sought to supply electricity to the entire country, bringing transformative socioeconomic benefits across its heterogeneous territories and populations. While this project was driven by nationalistic impulses, it was also motivated by a genuine interest in social justice. The entanglement of these two ideologies--nation-building and equity--shaped how electrification was carried out, including how the state chose the technologies it did. Private companies and electric cooperatives vied with the hegemonic state power company to participate in a monumental undertaking that would transform daily life for all Indonesians, especially rural citizens. In this innovative volume, Anto Mohsin brings Indonesian studies together with science and technology studies to understand a crucial period in modern Indonesian history. He shows that attempts to illuminate the country were inseparable from the effort to maintain the new nation-state, chart its path to independence, and legitimize ruling regimes. In exchange for an often dramatically improved standard of living, people gave their votes, and their acquiescence, to the ruling government.
Motorcycles are a major component of road transport in Indonesia with more than 120 million estimated to be in use. While the number of motorcycles operating in the country has steadily grown in recent years, the proportion of electric motorcycles remains very low. A shift away from fossil-fuel-based motorcycles will provide considerable benefits for Indonesia by reducing air and noise pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and reliance on fuel imports. This report examines how such a shift can be achieved with a focus on electric motorcycle charging infrastructure. It draws on best practices from other economies to provide a road map and policy recommendations for developing this infrastructure.
Indonesia has achieved an impressive 84% electrification ratio, but faces significant challenges in reaching the remaining 16% of its households. This report describes Indonesia’s electrification environment and identifies barriers to achieving universal electricity access. Principles drawn from international best practices such as government commitment, enabling institutional environments, adequate and sustainable financing, and stakeholder coordination are discussed in the context of Indonesia’s energy sector. The report gives recommendations for establishing service standards, streamlining financing, setting appropriate targets, and monitoring and evaluation, as well as near-term steps to help achieve universal electricity access.
This publication proposes a new independent regulatory body for Indonesia’s electricity sector, in particular for investment planning, procurement, tariff setting, and electrification. A situational analysis and review of stakeholder opinions strongly indicates that the current decision-making structures in the electricity sector of Indonesia are inadequate. The publication explains the current context and issues in operations and processes. It provides guidance on how an effective regulatory body can be established, including key tasks, legal aspects, and market design.
Essay Collection Advancing Future Generations-Population Issues in Indonesia and Korea It is with great pride that I introduce the Essay Collection ‘Advancing Future Generations: Population Issues in Indonesia and Korea’, a product of the World Population Day Conference hosted by the Korea-Indonesia Connection (KIC) FISIP UI on 16–17 July 2024. This collection of 23 essays offers valuable insights into the pressing population challenges faced by both Indonesia and Korea, refl ecting the collaborative efforts of scholars and experts dedicated to shaping a better future. Social scientists, in particular, can study population issues in Indonesia and Korea by examining various demographic factors such as birth rates, migration patterns, and aging populations. Research in Korea may concentrate on issues associated with an aging population and declining birth rates, whereas research in Indonesia may concentrate on urbanization and regional disparities. By contrasting these cases, we can gain understanding of how cultural and policy issues infl uence population patterns and the wider effects they have on society. This book is an important outcome of the cooperation between the Korea Foundation and FISIP UI. I am confi dent that this book will serve as an important resource for academics, policymakers, and the broader community, inspiring continued dialogue and action on these vital issues.
This book discusses how people can come together to address current energy justice and access poverty problems by examining the relationship between energy systems and society in diverse energy sources. The novelty of this book is that this is the only complete guide for readers who wish to understand the status of Indonesia’s energy transition and renewable energy development. Energy programs that are explored are the ones prioritized by government administrations, including coal, nuclear power, solar energy, green electricity, and geothermal energy.
