Excerpt from Electrical Measurements for Amateurs Before entering upon the subject of measure ments and measuring instruments, we will take a hasty survey of the units used and the manner of their derivation. Excerpt from Electrical Measurements In this book it is intended to give a general treatment of the subject of electrical measurements, special emphasis being placed on those matters which are important to the student of electrical engineering. In preparing a book of this character one has to consider, not only the mature reader who may desire a compendium of methods together with certain practical suggestions, but the student who is beginning the study of Electrical Engineering and who should acquire early in his course a sound knowledge of the process of electrical measurement. This knowledge is fundamental not only to much of the work which the student is required to do in the dynamo laboratory as a matter of engineering training, but to an adequate understanding of electrical testing as it is eu countered in the practice of the electrical engineering profession. In the preparation of the text this second class of readers has been particularly in mind. It is assumed that those who use this text have had courses in physics, the theory of electricity, and in mathematics, such as are given to third year students in technical schools of the first rank. Excerpt from Electrical Measurements and Meter Testing The difference between the readings Of the two gauges connected before and after the water motor represents the pressure required to overcome the Oppo sitiou Offered by the circuit through the motor and the pressure required to cause the revolving portion to turn. If there is no load on the motor, very little pressure will be required to operate it; but with an increase in load, there must be an increase in pressure acting on the motor if the speed is to be maintained constant. The action Of the water motor in this case corresponds to the constant-current series motor in the electrical circuit. Excerpt from Principles of Electrical Measurements Each of these systems is properly called an absolute, or a system, but all of the common units such as ohm, ampere, volt, etc., are based solely upon the electro magnetic c.g.s. System of units. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Electrical Measurements: A Laboratory Manual Progress in the methods of Electrical Measurement is quite as marked as in the applications of electricity. The perfecting of measuring instruments keeps pace with the demands imposed by scientific accuracy. Laboratory practice should not be permitted to lag behind discovery and commercial applications; obso lete methods may with propriety be relegated to historical collections, along With antiquated apparatus, so that students in electricity may learn only the latest modes of procedure. The authors of this book have proceeded on this plan in collecting and devising methods to form a graded series of experiments for the use of several classes in electrical measurements. How well they have succeeded others must decide. Quantitative experiments only have been introduced, and they have been selected with the object of illustrating the general methods of measurement rather than the applications to specific departments of technical work, such as submarine cable testing, telegraphy and telephony, or dynamo electric machinery. It is thought to be better that these subjects should be treated in Special handbooks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Electrical Measurements and Other Advanced Primers of Electricity Electrical Measurements and Other Advanced Primers of Electricity, the author again calls attention to the fact that these primers are in no sense to be regarded as revisions of the Primers of Electricity, published in Philadelphia in 1884, during the International Electrical Exhibition. The International Electrical Exhibition Primers, written during the early days of the Exhibition, were intended to explain merely the elementary principles of electricity to a public, that was then almost entirely ignorant of even the rudiments of the science. Excerpt from Electrical Measurements in Practice The subject Of electrical measurements has received much attention in the literature of electrical engineering. In general, however, the treatment has been from a theoretical or academic point Of view. In this volume the author has endeavored to present the subject in a simple, practical manner and from the standpoint Of engineers who are actively engaged in making measurements, tests and investigations in the electrical industry. All classes of measurements that the laboratory and testing engineer is Ordinarily called upon to make have been covered. The method Of treatment and part Of the material is the same as that in the author's co'ntribution on this subject to the Fourth Edition of the Standard Handbook for Electrical Engineers. Instruments must naturally form a prominent part of any discussion Of electrical measurements, but detailed descriptive matter pertaining to commercial instruments has been limited to those instruments in most general use and without which the book would be obviously incomplete. Maximum demand meters have, however, been described rather extensively because they are a comparatively recent development. A short chapter has also been devoted to curve-drawing instruments because of their important part in commercial measurements and in laboratory investigations. Excerpt from Practical Electrical Measurement Heavy electrical engineering has brought into use large currents which are out of the ken of telegraph engineers; strong magnetic fields; and, in fact, a set of conditions altogether different from those met with in the telegraph office, or in academic teaching. Excerpt from Electrical Measurements, Vol. 1: Elementary; Instruction Paper Physical quantities are measured in terms of quantities called units. These units, as a rule, are related to one another and form systems; as, for example, the British system and the C'. G. S. System. Fundamental Units. The arbitrarily chosen units of a system are called fundamental in distinction to the related units depending on them, 'which are called derived units. The C. G. S. System, univer sally used in electrical measurements, takes its name from three Of its fundamental units - the centimeter, the gram, and the second of mean solar time. Besides the three units from which it takes its name, the C. G. S. System includes other fundamental units; for example, the degree centigrade, the calorie, and the unit magnetic pole. Whenever the arbitrary choice Of a property Of a substance enters into the choice of a unit, the unit itself becomes fundamental. Thus' the calorie depends on the thermal capacity of water; the unit magnetic pole depends on the magnetic property of air, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
