International Conference on Bio-Inspired Computing: Theories and Applications (BIC-TA) is one of the flagship conferences on Bio-Computing, bringing together the world’s leading scientists from different areas of Natural Computing. Since 2006, the conferences have taken place at Wuhan (2006), Zhengzhou (2007), Adelaide (2008), Beijing (2009), Liverpool & Changsha (2010), Malaysia (2011) and India (2012). Following the successes of previous events, the 8th conference is organized and hosted by Anhui University of Science and Technology in China. This conference aims to provide a high-level international forum that researchers with different backgrounds and who are working in the related areas can use to present their latest results and exchange ideas. Additionally, the growing trend in Emergent Systems has resulted in the inclusion of two other closely related fields in the BIC-TA 2013 event, namely Complex Systems and Computational Neuroscience. These proceedings are intended for researchers in the fields of Membrane Computing, Evolutionary Computing and Genetic Algorithms, DNA and Molecular Computing, Biological Computing, Swarm Intelligence, Autonomy-Oriented Computing, Cellular and Molecular Automata, Complex Systems, etc. Professor Zhixiang Yin is the Dean of the School of Science, Anhui University of Science & Technology, China. Professor Linqiang Pan is the head of the research group of Natural Computing at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. Professor Xianwen Fang also works at the Anhui University of Science & Technology.
The editors provide a review of the programming environments for parallel computers with the help of worldwide specialists in each domain. Four different domains were discussed at the workshop, and they each form a part of this book.
The GIFT Users Symposia began in 2013 with the goal to capture successful implementations of GIFT from the user community and to share recommendations leading to more useful capabilities for authors, researchers, and learners of Adaptive Instructional Systems (AIS). Complex artificial dynamic systems require advanced modeling techniques that can accommodate their asynchronous, concurrent, and highly non-linear nature. Discrete Event systems Specification (DEVS) provides a formal framework for hierarchical construction of discrete-event models in a modular manner, allowing for model re-use and reduced development time. Discrete Event Modeling and Simulation presents a practical approach focused on the creation of discrete-event applications. The book introduces the CD++ tool, an open-source framework that enables the simulation of discrete-event models. After setting up the basic theory of DEVS and Cell-DEVS, the author focuses on how to use the CD++ tool to define a variety of models in biology, physics, chemistry, and artificial systems. They also demonstrate how to map different modeling techniques, such as Finite State Machines and VHDL, to DEVS. The CQRE [Secure] conference provides a new international forum giving a close-up view on information security in the context of rapidly evolving economic processes. The unprecedented reliance on computer technology has transformed the previous technical side-issue "information security" to a management problem requiring decisions of strategic importance. Thus one of the main goals of the conference is to provide a platform for both technical specialists as well as decision makers from government, industry, commercial, and academic communities. The target of CQRE is to promote and stimulate dialogue between managers and experts, which seems to be necessary for providing secure information systems in the next millennium. Therefore CQRE consists of two parts: Part I mainly focuses on strategic issues of information security, while the focus of Part II is more technical in nature. This volume of the conference proceedings consists of the reviewed and invited contributions of the second part. The program committee considered 46 papers and selected only 15 for full presentation. For the participants’ convenience we have also included the notes of the invited lectures and short workshop talks in this volume.
