In the scramble for Africa, Britain took a lion’s share of the continent. It occupied and controlled vast territories, including the Uganda Protectorate – which it ruled for 68 years. Early administrators in the region encountered the progressive kingdom of Buganda, which they incorporated into the British Empire. Under the guise of protection, indirect rule and patronage, Britain overran, plundered and disempowered the kingdom’s traditional institutions. On liquidation of the Empire, Buganda was coaxed into a problematic political order largely dictated from London. Today, 56 years after independence, the kingdom struggles to rediscover itself within Uganda’s fragile politics. Based on newly de-classified records, this book reconstructs a history of the machinations underpinning British imperial interests in (B)Uganda and the personalities who embodied colonial rule. It addresses Anglo-Uganda relations, demonstrating how Uganda’s politics reflects its colonial past, and the forces shaping its future. It is a far-reaching examination of British rule in (B)uganda, questioning whether it was designed for protection, for patronage or for plunder.
First published in 1958, The Making of Modern Uganda is concerned with the formation of modern Uganda in the sixty years since the 1890s when the foundations of the British administration were laid. In the first decade of the 20th century Sir Hesketh Bell, Uganda’s Governor, decided that Uganda should be built up by Africans under the disinterested guidance of Europeans. The book therefore traces the emergence of a territory whose material prosperity is mainly based upon peasant agriculture guided by the advice of British agricultural officers. It describes the development from an era of tribal, clan and even village organisation to the system of centralised government along semi-parliamentary lines but notes the disagreement as to whether Uganda’s future should lie as a unitary or a federal state. The controversial issue of closer union with the other East African territories is studied at some length as also is the growth of the politically active minority which plays so important a part in the modern Protectorate. The author believes that the years of ‘happy Uganda’, the years before the Second World War, were a period in which hard work coupled with peace and obvious progress tended to conceal for many the growth of new forces which needed an outlet and only found one in the political and constitutional developments of the post-war age. This book will be of interest to students of history, African studies, ethnic studies and political science.
This book examines how and why the British were able to establish a colonial government in what became known as 'Uganda'.
This book is the first full-length examination of the cultural politics at work in the act of translation in East Africa, providing close critical analyses of a variety of texts that demonstrate the myriad connections between translation and larger socio-political forces. Looking specifically at texts translated into Swahili, the book builds on the notion that translation is not just a linguistic process, but also a complex interaction between culture, history, and politics, and charts this evolution of the translation process in East Africa from the pre-colonial to colonial to post-colonial periods. It uses textual examples, including the Bible, the Qur’an, and Frantz Fanon’s Wretched of the Earth, from five different domains – religious, political, legal, journalistic, and literary – and grounds them in their specific socio-political and historical contexts to highlight the importance of context in the translation process and to unpack the complex relationships between both global and local forces that infuse these translated texts with an identity all their own. This book provides a comprehensive portrait of the multivalent nature of the act of translation in the East African experience and serves as a key resource for students and researchers in translation studies, cultural studies, post-colonial studies, African studies, and comparative literature.
Slavery in the Great Lakes Region of East Africa is a collection of ten studies by the most prominent historians of the region. Slavery was more important in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa than often has been assumed, and Africans from the interior played a more complex role than was previously recognized. The essays in this collection reveal the connections between the peoples of the region as well as their encounters with the conquering Europeans. The contributors challenge the assertion that domestic slavery increased in Africa as a result of the international trade. Slavery in this region was not a uniform phenomenon and the line between enslaved and non-slave labor was fine. Kinship ties could mark the difference between free and unfree labor. Social categories were not always clear-cut and the status of a slave could change within a lifetime.
