With artistic research becoming an established paradigm in art education, several questions arise. How do we train young artists and designers to actively engage in the production of knowledge and aesthetic experiences in an expanded field? How do we best prepare students for their own artistic research? What comprises a curriculum that accommodates a changed learning, making, and research landscape? And what is the difference between teaching art and teaching artistic research? What are the specific skills and competences a teacher should have? Inspired by a symposium at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 2018, this book presents a diversity of well-reasoned answers to these questions.
This book explores the ways in which education impacts labor markets. Specifically, the contributions in this book indicate that the future of labor is creative, socially aware and inter-disciplinary while identifying the changes and innovations needed in our educational systems to meet this demand. Due to an increasing automatization (robotic manufacturing), the character of labor and work in general will change dramatically in the near future. This will be the case not only in the western countries, but also in the larger emerging economies in Asia, for example China and India. While societal environments, economy and the character of labor are increasingly in a process of dramatic changes, the educational systems and the leading principles of research about labor and employment are not changing adequately. Cross-disciplinary (inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary) thinking and learning is not the main focus of our educational systems. Consequently, the systems of academic research follow and apply disciplinary or even sub-disciplinary strategies, avoiding cross-disciplinary research approaches, and not supporting inter-disciplinary academic career models. This book introduces such strategic models to better prepare the next generation of workers for the new knowledge economy, and the future of democratic societies.
It has always been the case that the teaching of art has had to deal with social changes. We are currently facing historic challenges and phenomena which we could never have imagined – the global financial crisis, the massive migration flows, and the ubiquitous spread of new technologies in our everyday life. Creative competence is needed for overcoming the disciplinary boundaries and in order to make equal opportunities for education possible in a diverse society. This publication takes a critical look at the role of art and design education amidst these social changes – using theoretical reflection, practical experience, and empirical analysis.
Dieses Buch untersucht experimentelle Ansätze für Entwurf und Umsetzung von Holzstrukturen in der Architektur und präsentiert zugleich die Resultate eines künstlerischen Forschungsprojekts. Durch den Einsatz digitaler Werkzeuge wird die Anatomie des Holzes als entwurfsbestimmendes Prinzip für Raumgefüge genutzt, das Potenzial traditioneller Handwerkskunst erforscht und daraus eine materialorientierte Architekturpraxis abgeleitet. Wolf D. Prix, founder of Coop Himmelb(l)au was more than 20 years head of Studio Prix at the Angewandte in Vienna. His architectural visions shaped the studio with radical concepts, high profile strategies and right from the beginning enabled students to develop projects for the world of the future. It presents the current state of research and discusses the possibility of realizing the project using today's means, and it also brings together various contributions by artists and architects who reflect on Kiesler's most important work. Texts were contributed by Sanford Kwinter, Klaus Bollinger, Brian Hatton, Laura McGuire, Florian Medicus, Jill Meissner, and Gerd Zillner, with the foreword by Hani Rashid.
