This easy-to-use guide is part travel book, part South Carolina history, and a convenient guide for discovering the Edisto River. Filled with maps and suggestions for places to stop, the Edisto River Companion is an essential guide for those interested in experiencing one of the best of South Carolina's rivers.
"What is it about a black water river that causes travelers to slow their pace, breathe deeper and move in harmony with its flow? It draws us back again and again, the steady rhythm unchanged by time or the efforts of man, a siren's song calling us to return." And so begins EDISTO RIVER: BLACK WATER CROWN JEWEL, a journey of words and photographs of the longest free-flowing black water river in North America. From the South Carolina Midlands to the coastal shore of the Lowcountry, the Edisto River winds more than 300 unobstructed miles to the Atlantic Ocean. Because of its life-giving, nutrient-rich waters, the Edisto River is one of the most productive and necessary places on earth. But it is also one of the most beautiful. Even on foggy or cloudy days, its black water is a perfect mirror, reflecting a world of color, its low sandy banks a stage for daily performances in the theater of natural and human history. Open this book and enjoy the journey.
The early years include principally resolutions, with few reports.
The region embraced in these studies lies between MD & TX. It comprises the faunas of the various watersheds of this part of the Atlantic & Gulf slopes. Frequent comparison with many of the drainages of the TN & MI valleys has been necessary; much of the material reported from those areas has been re-examined. The inception of this report, however, begins with the collections made by Francis Harper from 1930-1945. The lots of fishes he gathered during his southern trips have been studied. Extensive noteworthy collections were made by Joseph Galloway. These were supplemented by Fowler¿s own collecting trips & the staff of the Acad. of Nat. Sci. of Phila. in NC in 1940, & of the Southern Piedmont-Coastal Plain Aquatic Survey of 1941 & 1942. Illus.
