Temperate broadleaved tree species, i.e. Acer platanoides, Carpinus betulus, Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus excelsior, Prunus avium, Quercus robur and Q. petraea, Ulmus glabra and Tilia cordata, cover a total area of 200 000 ha of forest land in southern Sweden. Despite their documented importance for economy, biodiversity, social aspects and climate change adaptation, little applied research has focused on these forest types. With its 20 papers, this volume presents the latest findings concerning the management of broadleaved forests for multiple goals including aspects of natural resource economy, human health, habitat conservation and restoration, forest production and wood science. Thus, this volume of Ecological Bulletins should be of great interest to all actors involved in sustainable forest management.
A Nordic Workshop on “Ecosystem Services in Forests – how to assess and value them” was held in Oslo Thursday the 13th of September 2012. During the day, 13 presentations were made, and altogether 41 participants had the opportunity to discuss the way forward and to formulate issues and research fields as recommendations to the Nordic Council of Ministers. This report presents a synthesis of the presentations and provides a brief summary of issues that were raised in the discussions. The workshop addressed both current knowledge of services as well as challenges and possibilities related to assessment and valuation, and challenged participants to formulate new and important issues based on their respective fields of expertise.
This book focuses on the diverse impact of forest history in general, and of forest continuity, fragmentation and past management in particular, on the diversity and distribution of species. The implications for the conservation of biodiversity in forests are also addressed. Chapters have been developed from papers presented at a conference held in Leuven in January 2003. Suserup Skov in Denmark is a well-preserved beech-dominated forest reserve with continuity in tree cover at least back to 4200 BC, indicating it to be a direct descendent of the primeval forests. Despite of documented historical impact from humans, Suserup Skov is now increasingly characterized by natural disturbance dynamics and is one of the best reference areas for naturalness in the nemoral part of northern Europe. This has attracted several research projects focussing on forest dynamics, ecology and biodiversity which are summarized in this issue of Ecological Bulletins. This volume focuses on three main areas: 1) stand structures and dynamics 2) water and nutrient cycling processes, and 3) vegetation patterns and processes. With a compilation of scientific reviews, detailed case-studies and experimental works, the volume provides a unique and in-depth overview of structures and processes in a single forest reserve. The aim is to establish a basic reference of science and practice within forestry and nature conservation.
