The first Merry Christmas ever wished likewise came from heaven. It was spoken on the very first Christmas morn to the lowly shepherds keeping their lonely watches on the Judean hillsides. And the angel said to them: Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy that shall be to all the people; for this day is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. That was the angel's way of saying Merry to the shepherds, and he tells the reason why they should be merry. This reason, for this day is born to you a Saviour, is inseparably linked with the feast and its friendly greeting.
