Excerpt from Eastward, or a Buddhist Lover: A Novel His father had been too closely engaged in weighing out sugar and coffee on small profits to hunt up the genealogy of his family; and his mother, poor soul, had never known the time when her arms were free from encircling a (young Livingston, whose baby necessities absorbe her entire attention. How Gerald came to be registered as a theologue was in this wise: Mr. Livingston, Sr., had quite a family of sons growing up around him and, fearing he could not give them all the personal attention their morals demanded, determined, as Gerald was the eldest and had already shown some symptoms of lounging, to make of him a minister of the gospel. By this means he hoped to show to the younger scions a healthy moral example and at the same time secure an element of savin grace in his own behalf. For, he reasoned, if send my son into the Lord's vineyard, it will surely inure to my own advantage, as well as to that of my whole family. Excerpt from The Naulahka a Story of West and East, Vol. 2 of 2 Beat off in our last fight were we? The greater need to seek the sea; For Fortune changeth as the moon To caravel and picaroon. Then, Eastward Ho! or Westward Ho! Whichever wind may meetest blow. Our quarry sails on either sea, Fat prey for such bold lads as we. And every sun-dried buccaneer Must hand and reef and watch and steer, And bear great wrath of sea and sky Before the plate-ships wallow by. Now, as our tall bow takes the foam, Let no man turn his heart to home, Save to desire land the more, And larger warehouse for his store, When treasure won from Santos Bay Shall make our sea-washed village gay. Blackboard. Fibby and Tarvin ate their breakfast together, half an hour later, in the blotched shadows of the scrub below the wall. The horse buried his nose into his provender, and said nothing. Excerpt from The Plays and Poems of George Chapman the Tragedies Edited With Introductions and Notes This, the first volume of a new edition of the plays and poems of George Chapman, includes his tragedies, Bussy D'Ambois, The Revenge of Bussy, The Conspiracy and Tragedy of Byron, Chabot, and Ccesar and Pompey, together with the two tragedies ascribed to him by their first publishers, Alphonsus Emperor of Germany, and Revenge for Honour. The second volume will contain his comedies, and the third his poems, along with a general introduction, a glossary, and a bibliography. The need of a complete edition of Chapman's plays and poems has long been felt by students of Elizabethan literature. It was not until more than two centuries after his death that the first collection of his plays, The Comedies and Tragedies of George Chapman, London, 1873, appeared. This collection was incomplete, omitting Chabot and Eastward Ho, and the text which professed to be an exact reprint of the old editions left much to be desired. In 1874-5 tne nrst complete edition of his works appeared, edited by R. H. Shepherd, who is generally understood to have been the editor of the previous edition. This later edition, although remedying the omissions of the former, is satisfactory neither to the general reader nor to the student of the Elizabethan drama. There is no need to go into details here; evidence of the careless manner in which the task was performed will be found in abundance in my Text Notes to the various plays. Since 1875 only selected plays of Chapman have been published, and of these the largest collection, that included in the Mermaid Series, rests upon the work of Mr. Shepherd. There is, I believe, ample room for a new and complete edition, which will at once satisfy the demand of scholars for an accurate text, and present the work of the noble old poet in a form suited to the general reading public. Such, at least, is the opinion of the present editor, and it is at this goal that he has aimed in the preparation of the present edition. Excerpt from Through Siberia and Manchuria by Rail It was a lovely day with fair wind and smooth sea, and had only the vessel's bows been pointed in the opposite direction, I should have been perfectly happy, but they were not, so I had to make the best of things, which consisted in watching over the stern Old Eng land's chalk cliffs, gleaming white in the brilliant sunshine, slowly sink and disappear into the heaving main. This play, written by Ben Jonson and George Chapman, is a satire on the court of James I, and the English. It is about two young tradesmen who are attempting to find their fortune by seeking their fortunes in Virginia. However, their journey isn't as easy as they thought it would be and they find themselves in a series of comic situations along the way. This is a classic play that is recommended for anyone interested in English literature or drama.
