Excerpt from The East Anglian, or Notes and Queries on Subjects Connected With the Counties of Suffolk, Cambridge, Essex and Norfolk, Vol. 1 East Anglia possesses fewer examples probably than any other part of England, of Stone or other similar Crosses which in ancient days, were to be found throughout the land in the Churchyard, by the wayside, and in the most public places Of resort. SO utterly has even their memory perished, that it is dificult to Obtain anything more than a general idea of only a very small number of such Crosses that existed a generation or so since. It is altogether out of the question to do for the Eastern Counties what has been already accomplished for the South East Of England and other parts of Great Britain, which are rich in ancient Crosses. It is thought, however, that an attempt might well be made in these pages to give some account, however meagre Of the Crosses known to exist or that previously existed in East Anglia, and that such account might in some measure remedy any neglect on the part of our ancestors. The readers of the East Anglian Notes and Queries are asked to assist in making this list as full and complete as possible. It is hoped that the following, which have come under the writer's own Observation, will at length' be regarded but as a drop in the ocean.
