This book is the transcribed minutes and/or membership lists of eight of Morgan County, Georgia's earliest churches - one Methodist, six Baptist, and one Presbyterian. The minutes are a wealth of cultural, genealogical, and historical primary records. Several sets of minutes begin in the first few years of the incorporation of the county, others later on, but the author stopped most transcriptions at the end of 1868, well after the Civil War, when African Americans were first being received and dismissed with surnames. The minutes also detail charges and trials of members who defied church rules and morals, and ordination of deacons and pastors. Membership lists include births, deaths, and spouses. The author also includes 13 catalogues, listing hundreds students, of two female colleges which were sponsored by two of the churches, and links to the biographies and obituaries of many of the ministers who worked at and visited the eight churches.
Few places in the United States feel the impact of courthouse disasters like the state of Georgia. Over its history, 75 of the state's counties have suffered 109 events resulting in the loss or severe damage of their courthouse or court offices. This book documents those destructive events, including the date, time, circumstance, and impact on records. Each county narrative is supported by historical accounts from witnesses, newspapers, and legal documents. Maps show the geographic extent of major courthouse fires. Record losses are described in general terms, helping researchers understand which events are most likely to affect their work.
