The interaction of living materials with inanimate materials via physical and chemical reactions poses an acute danger for the longevity of our cultural heritage, as long as it exists in the material form and not in that of the invincible word. Thus our concern for cultural heritage must reach the same level as our current concern for the conservation of the natural environment, both through public education and through the development of guidelines for scientists, restorers, and conservators. To this end, this volume explores the status of scientific and humanistic approaches to our cultural heritage and the disequilibria in research and related disciplines. Particular areas discussed include the processes of aging and decay, the durability of material objects, the acceleration of the patina and decay processes in cultural materials through environmental and biological hazards, and the techniques that are both available now and under development for protecting, conserving, and restoring our cultural heritage. This volume is a multidisciplinary attempt to set up dialogue between those who do research and those who practice conservation and restoration. It will be of interest to anyone interested in cultural heritage and, in particular, to those art historians, archeologists, architects, communication scientists, chemists, biologists, mineralogists, and physicists who are also seeking to bridge this gap. Goal of this Dahlem Workshop: to evaluate processes that contribute to change in objects, cultural materials, and artifacts, and to find appropriate ways of conserving them.
Systematic analysis of the determinants of climate policy durability, combining state-of-the-art policy theories with empirical accounts of landmark political events
Modes of Composition and the Durability of Style employs the tools and methods of computational stylistics to show that style is extremely resistant to changes in how texts are produced. Addressing an array of canonical writers, including William Faulkner, Joseph Conrad, Thomas Hardy, and Henry James, along with popular contemporary writers like Stephen King and Ian McEwan, this volume presents a systematic study of changes in mode of composition and writing technologies. Computational analysis of texts produced in multiple circumstances of composition, such as dictation, handwriting, typewriting, word processing, and translation, reveals the extraordinary durability of authorial style. Modes of Composition and the Durability of Style in Literature will be essential for readers interested in exploring the rapidly expanding field of digital approaches to literature.
Long-Term Performance and Durability of Masonry Structures: Degradation Mechanisms, Health Monitoring and Service Life Design focuses on the long-term performance of masonry and historical structures. The book covers a wide range of related topics, including degradation mechanisms in different masonry types, structural health monitoring techniques, and long-term performance and service life design approaches. Each chapter reflects recent findings and the state-of-the-art, providing practical guidelines. Key topics covered include the theoretical background, transport properties, testing and modeling, protective measures and standards and codes. The book's focus is on individual construction materials, the composite system and structural performance. - Covers all issues related to durability, including degradation mechanisms, testing and design, monitoring and service life design - Focuses on different masonry construction types - Presents a 'one-stop' reference for advanced postgraduate courses that focuses on the durability of masonry and historical constructions
Durability and Reliability of Polymers and Other Materials in Photovoltaic Modules describes the durability and reliability behavior of polymers used in Si-photovoltaic modules and systems, particularly in terms of physical aging and degradation process/mechanisms, characterization methods, accelerated exposure chamber and testing, module level testing, and service life prediction. The book compares polymeric materials to traditional materials used in solar applications, explaining the degradation pathways of the different elements of a photovoltaic module, including encapsulant, front sheet, back sheet, wires and connectors, adhesives, sealants, and more. In addition, users will find sections on the tests needed for the evaluation of polymer degradation and aging, as well as accelerated tests to aid in materials selection. As demand for photovoltaics continues to grow globally, with polymer photovoltaics offering significantly lower production costs compared to earlier approaches, this book will serve as a welcome resource on new avenues.
In his well-known direct but humorous style, Perez uses personal antidotes and applications to relay vital information to both new and seasoned leaders looking for a fresh approach."The way to protect ourselves from the constant storm of change is to ensure that we are being proactive in developing our professional durability," said Perez, an entrepreneur, and mentor for over 25 years. "We need to make sure that as leaders we are not only socially and emotionally stable to withstand the storm, but that we are teaching our people how to become mentally and emotionally durable as well."Teaching others about emotional intelligence and leadership are passions of Perez, who has impacted thousands with his Ted talk on servant leadership, currently used in graduate programs nationwide. In his new book, the author asks readers to look for parallels from their life experiences and apply them to their professional growth and development to help themselves and others. Self-awareness, resilience, accountability, and how to stay committed to achieving desired outcomes are central to the discussion.
Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites: Innovative Modelling Methods and Intelligent Design presents scientific and technological research from leading composite materials scientists and engineers that showcase the fundamental issues and practical problems that affect the development and exploitation of large composite structures. As predicting precisely where cracks may develop in materials under stress is an age old mystery in the design and building of large-scale engineering structures, the burden of testing to provide "fracture safe design" is imperative. Readers will learn to transfer key ideas from research and development to both the design engineer and end-user of composite materials. This comprehensive text provides the information users need to understand deformation and fracture phenomena resulting from impact, fatigue, creep, and stress corrosion cracking and how these phenomena can affect reliability, life expectancy, and the durability of structures. - Presents scientific and technological research from leading composite materials scientists and engineers that showcase fundamental issues and practical problems - Provides the information users need to understand deformation and fracture phenomena resulting from impact, fatigue, creep, and stress corrosion cracking - Enables readers to transfer key ideas from research and development to both the design engineer and end-user of composite materials
Political scholars examine the dynamic evolution of laws over time in a volume that “pushes the frontiers of knowledge about lawmaking in the US” (Choice). Politics is at its most dramatic during debates over important pieces of legislation. And while debates over legislative measures can rage for years or even decades before an item is enacted, they also endure long afterward, when the political legacy of a law eventually comes into focus. With a diverse set of contributors—including quantitative political scientists, political development scholars, historians, and economists—Living Legislation provides fresh insights into contemporary American politics and public policy. Many of the contributors to this volume focus on the question of why some laws stand the test of time while others are eliminated, replaced, or significantly amended. Others discuss how laws emerge from—and effect change within—coalition structures; the effectiveness of laws at mediating partisan conflicts; and the ways in which laws interact with broader shifts in the political environment. An essential addition to the study of politics, Living Legislation enhances understanding of democracy, governance, and power.
