The national and European-level studies of the factors that ensure the success of young people's vocational integration and that offer protection against unemployment were reviewed. The research established that, in most national statistical reports, information on the occupational progress of school-leavers and those emerging from initial training was sparse. It was concluded that, although national statistics and surveys could be used to supplement and explain some of the findings of European surveys, any attempts to use national statistics gathered in the various European countries for purposes of comparison should proceed with caution. Networks currently working in the field of transition at the European level were encouraged to publish their data so as to optimize the use of research work. It was further recommended that the process of conducting comparative studies of the factors ensuring successful transition from the educational system into the labor market begin with prioritization of the large number of themes currently being tackled in national publications. Youth Transition in a Globalised Marketplace (YTGM) is a study based on the experiences of youth in a number of countries. It deals with the increasingly complex question of youth transition. Galland introduced the notion of transition to adult life as a journey. He believes there are four centrally important thresholds that define the pattern and progress of transition to adulthood. These he defines as completing education/training, entry to employment, leaving home and forming a couple. Immigration is a topic that is as important among anthropologists as it is the general public. Almost every culture has experienced adaptation and assimilation when immigrating to a new country and culture; usually leaving for what is perceived as a "better life". Not only does this diaspora change the country of adoption, but also the country of origin. Many large nations in the world have absorbed, and continue to absorb, large numbers of immigrants. The foreseeable future will see a continuation of large-scale immigration, as many countries experience civil war and secessionist pressures. Currently, there is no reference work that describes the impact upon the immigrants and the immigrant societies relevant to the world's cultures and provides an overview of important topics in the world's diasporas. The encyclopedia consists of two volumes covering three main sections: Diaspora Overviews covers over 20 ethnic groups that have experienced voluntary or forced immigration. These essays discuss the history behind the social, economic, and political reasons for leaving the original countries, and the cultures in the new places; Topics discusses the impact and assimilation that the immigrant cultures experience in their adopted cultures, including the arts they bring, the struggles they face, and some of the cities that are in the forefront of receiving immigrant cultures; Diaspora Communities include over 60 portraits of specific diaspora communities. Each portrait follows a standard outline to facilitate comparisons. The Encyclopedia of Diasporas can be used both to gain a general understanding of immigration and immigrants, and to find out about particular cultures, topics and communities. It will prove of great value to researchers and students, curriculum developers, teachers, and government officials. It brings together the disciplines of anthropology, social studies, political studies, international studies, and immigrant and immigration studies.
Young people in the Middle East (15–29 years old) constitute about one-third of the region's population. Growth rates for this age group trail only sub-Saharan Africa. This presents the region with an historic opportunity to build a lasting foundation for prosperity by harnessing the full potential of its young population. Yet young people in the Middle East face severe economic and social exclusion due to substandard education, high unemployment, and poverty. Thus the inclusion of youth is the most critical development challenge facing the Middle East today. A Generation in Waiting portrays the plight of young people, urging greater investment designed to improve the lives of this critical group. It brings together perspectives from the Maghreb to the Levant. Each chapter addresses the complex challenges facing young people in many areas of their lives: access to decent education, opportunities for quality employment, availability of housing and credit, and transitioning to marriage and family formation. This volume presents policy implications and sets an agenda for economic development, creating a more hopeful future for this and future generations in the Middle East. This annotated bibliography on women and vocational training was compiled through a search of the database on vocational training in the European Community and its member states. Key words used in the search were "woman,""equality," and "vocational training." The database contains references to books, periodical articles, legislation, and other published material, selected either by CEDEFOP (European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training) or by the members of the Documentary Information Network. The 465 items listed in this bibliography were published between 1985 and 1990. They are organized into the following categories: (1) the 12 community countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom; (2) European Economic Community and CEDEFOP; (3) the United States and other countries; and (4) the International Labour Office and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Each entry contains information on author, type of publication, title, publisher, city of publication, date, number of pages, index terms (key words), and an abstract. All keywords are in English; however, many of the abstracts are in French and/or German only. (KC)
