Do Smart Adaptive Systems Exist? is intended as a reference and a guide summarising and focusing on best practices when using intelligent techniques and building systems requiring a degree of adaptation and intelligence. It is therefore not intended as a collection of the most recent research results, but as a practical guide for experts from other areas and industrial users interested in building solutions to their problems using intelligent techniques. One of the main issues covered is an attempt to answer the question of how to select and/or combine suitable intelligent techniques from a large pool of potential solutions. Another attractive feature of the book is that it brings together experts from neural network, fuzzy, machine learning, evolutionary and hybrid systems communities who will provide their views on how these different intelligent technologies have contributed and will contribute to creation of smart adaptive systems of the future.
The Third International Workshop on Hybrid Artificial Intelligence Systems (HAIS 2008) presented the most recent developments in the dynamically expanding realm of symbolic and sub-symbolic techniques aimed at the construction of highly robust and reliable problem-solving techniques. Hybrid intelligent systems have become incre- ingly popular given their capabilities to handle a broad spectrum of real-world c- plex problems which come with inherent imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness, high-dimensionality, and non stationarity. These systems provide us with the oppor- nity to exploit existing domain knowledge as well as raw data to come up with prom- ing solutions in an effective manner. Being truly multidisciplinary, the series of HAIS workshops offers a unique research forum to present and discuss the latest theoretical advances and real-world applications in this exciting research field. This volume of Lecture Notes on Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) includes accepted papers presented at HAIS 2008 held in University of Burgos, Burgos, Spain, Sept- ber 2008 The global purpose of HAIS conferences has been to form a broad and interdis- plinary forum for hybrid artificial intelligence systems and associated learning pa- digms, which are playing increasingly important roles in a large number of application areas. Since its first edition in Brazil in 2006, HAIS has become an important forum for researchers working on fundamental and theoretical aspects of hybrid artificial intel- gence systems based on the use of agents and multiagent systems, bioinformatics and bio-inspired models, fuzzy systems, artificial vision, artificial neural networks, opti- zation models and alike.
This volume is a brief, yet comprehensive account of new development, tools, techniques and solutions in the broadly perceived “intelligent systems”. New concepts and ideas concern the development of effective and efficient models which would make it possible to effectively and efficiently describe and solve processes in various areas of science and technology. Special emphasis is on the dealing with uncertainty and imprecision that permeates virtually all real world processes and phenomena, and has to properly be modeled by formal and algorithmic tools and techniques so that they be adequate and useful. The papers in this volume concern a wide array of possible techniques exemplified by, on the one hand, logic, probabilistic, fuzzy, intuitionistic fuzzy, neuro-fuzzy, etc. approaches. On the other hand, they represent the use of such systems modeling tools as generalized nets, optimization and control models, systems analytic models, etc. They concerns a variety of approaches, from pattern recognition, image analysis, education system modeling, biological and medical systems modeling, etc.
The two LNAI volumes 6678 and 6679 constitute the proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Hybrid Artificial Intelligent Systems, HAIS 2011, held in Wroclaw, Poland, in May 2011. The 114 papers published in these proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from 241 submissions. They are organized in topical sessions on hybrid intelligence systems on logistics and intelligent optimization; metaheuristics for combinatorial optimization and modelling complex systems; hybrid systems for context-based information fusion; methods of classifier fusion; intelligent systems for data mining and applications; systems, man, and cybernetics; hybrid artificial intelligence systems in management of production systems; habrid artificial intelligent systems for medical applications; and hybrid intelligent approaches in cooperative multi-robot systems.

Consequently, we have a clear aspiration to meet the obvious need for effective use of its potential by making - provements in both the methods and the technology applied. Among the new research directions observable in Web-related applications, intelligent methods from within the broadly perceived topic of soft computing occupy an important place. AWIC, the “Atlantic Web Intelligence Conferences” are intended to be a forum for exchange of new ideas and novel practical solutions in this new and exciting ?eld. The conference was born as an initiative of the WIC-Poland and the WIC-Spain Research Centres, both belonging to the Web Intelligence Consortium – WIC (http://wi-consortium.org/). The idea about this book has evolved during the process of its preparation as some of the results have been achieved in parallel with its writing. One reason for this is that in this area of research results are very quickly updated. Another is, possibly, that a strong, unchallenged theoretical basis in this field still does not fully exist. From other hand, the rate of innovation, competition and demand from different branches of industry (from biotech industry to civil and building engineering, from market forecasting to civil aviation, from robotics to emerging e-commerce) is increasingly pressing for more customised solutions based on learning consumers behaviour. A highly interdisciplinary and rapidly innovating field is forming which focus is the design of intelligent, self-adapting systems and machines. It is on the crossroads of control theory, artificial and computational intelligence, different engineering disciplines borrowing heavily from the biology and life sciences. It is often called intelligent control, soft computing or intelligent technology. Some other branches have appeared recently like intelligent agents (which migrated from robotics to different engineering fields), data fusion, knowledge extraction etc., which are inherently related to this field.
