In this closely argued philosophical study, theologian Richard Grigg claims that faith in the United States is changing as traditional religious ideas struggle to survive in a dynamic environment. Whereas a large percentage of Americans still report that they believe in God, Grigg shows that this belief can no longer mean what it used to mean: modern science has taken over much of the cognitive territory that used to belong to religion, and uniquely contemporary problems of theodicy threaten the believer's sense that God is in fact in his heaven, while all is right with the world. Increasingly, American religion survives only if relegated to the private sphere. And yet a God that is relegated to the private sphere cannot be the God that has formed the centrepiece of the major religions of the West. When God Becomes Goddess suggests that one way in which Americans may keep the traditional Western idea of God alive – paradoxically – is to embrace the Goddess of feminist theology. Collecting a variety of feminist theologies under the rubric of enactment theology, Grigg demonstrates how these theologies offer much more than a critique of patriarchy; indeed, her gender aside, Grigg suggests that the Goddess may create an avenue through which the concept of God might be rescued from the pressing forces of secularization.
Suffering, especially that of the innocent and those unjustly treated, is a universal experience which has perplexed and agonised humanity. This reality is especially a challenge to believers in an all powerful, good and loving God. Within the Christian tradition in particular, because of the centrality of the cross and the crucified and risen One, there has been a tradition which has hallowed suffering. In this perspective suffering per se, whatever its origin, is mystified as a necessary prelude to salvation. Is suffering salvific? Are all experiences of suffering saving? What is God's attitude and involvement with suffering? In this work, these questions are explored through the lens of Edward Schillebeeckx's later theology which is primarily concerned with the development of a contemporary soteriology.
In this exciting volume, new and emerging voices join senior Reformed scholars in presenting a coherent and impassioned articulation of Calvinism for today's world. Evangelical Calvinism represents a mood within current Reformed theology. The various contributors are in different ways articulating that mood, of which their very diversity is a significant element. In attempting to outline features of an Evangelical Calvinism, a number of the contributors compare and contrast this approach with that of Federal Calvinism currently dominant in North American Reformed theology, challenging the assumption that Federal Calvinism is the only possible expression of orthodox Reformed theology. This book does not, however, represent the arrival of a "new Calvinism" or even a "neo-Calvinism," if by those terms are meant a novel reading of the Reformed faith. An Evangelical Calvinism highlights a Calvinistic tradition that has developed particularly within Scotland, but is not unique to the Scots. The editors have picked up the baton passed on by John Calvin, Karl Barth, Thomas Torrance, and others, in order to offer the family of Reformed theologies a reinvigorated theological and spiritual ethos.
