An architectural and historical study of Singapore's oldest Teochew Temple. At the turn of the nineteenth century, Teochew-speaking gambier and pepper farmers settled in Singapore. Surrounded by the skyscrapers of Singapore's central business district, Wak Hai Cheng Bio temple traces its history back to the earliest days of the colony. While no written sources or inscriptions commemorate the founding of the temple, Yeo Kang Shua's book delves into the history of the temple's foundation, encountering a rich history along the way. Poetic and commemorative, Yeo attends to the testimony of the building itself--the location, materials, ornamentation, and artwork that charge the space with meaning. Divine Custody tells the story of a temple that formed and was formed by its community. Of interest to heritage studies and those seeking to understand the experience of Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, this book is exemplary in the way it uses material culture and architectural history as historical sources.
Frederik A.V.
Child abuse can be curbed in the Muslim Arab World, since preventive measures are really in our hands. They are actually a part of a binding force that impacts almost each and every step we take in life; that force is simply Islam: our religion, which does not only define our relationship with God (Allah) Almighty but is also in actuality a way of life. This book makes the argument that a culture in which true or authentic Islamic values are rightly implemented measures up to being one that safeguards and recognizes the rights granted to children by no one other than their merciful and gracious creator Allah. It also proposes a practical framework that explains the types of measures, cultural changes, and structural modifications needed to be implemented to combat child abuse in the Muslim Arab World, with all the religious, cultural, and social specificities of it as a region.
Many have been puzzled for centuries at the biological creature that science calls homo sapience (humankind). Most people often question what constitutes man’s true spiritual nature, which is invisible to our sense of sight. There is the quest to know what constitutes the mind, consciousness, the soul, and the essence of our spirit-soul personality. Many still believe that there may be no definitive answers which will provide the necessary satisfaction about this incorporeal essence of the soul and life of humanity. But how come God made humans the most advanced biological rational beings on the earth plane? Our modern sciences have tried to resolve this great mystery, and they have only successfully unveiled the mortal body(the outer self) but yet to understand the inner spiritual nature. The psalmist David wrote many centuries ago, asking the same significant question that has plagued humanity throughout time. As King David reflected upon this unique being (humanity), he asked this central question: What is man [humankind] that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you cared for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honour. (Psalm 8:4-5. ESV) How is he a spiritual being imprisoned in flesh and bones with skin on the outside? How does his soul consciousness work in harmony with his body and mind? You may be asking if we are a soul as an entity or as a material object that we could carry around. How does man’s inner spiritual body help him to relate to the material universe? This book is the second book in the soul trilogy series, and it is a must-read resource on the subject of spirituality, mindfulness, and the nature of the inner human spirit Soul. It hopes to guide readers to discover the mystery of the inner self and its relationship to the spirit world.
The Eternal Destiny of Human Life covers the subject of what happens after humankind departs from this world. According to the Bible, only two men have lived on this earth without physical death, Enoch and Elijah, the prophets. But many religions and cultures believe in some afterlife. You may ask: Do humans re-incarnate or roam around as free spirits in the afterlife? Do people become ghosts of the dead after they pass to the other side? And if “yes” or “no,” how do we know this as fact? We may have asked ourselves: who are the so-called “dead people” or “spirit people” seen here on earth during séances? Are they “actually deceased persons” or “spirit actors,” or are “the imitators of the dead”? This volume will help answer many of these questions in ways that may interest you. It is a guidebook on the soul trilogy and the physics of immortality. Again, what constitutes the “tunnel of light” commonly reported by those who have experienced near-death phenomena? If you were the historical Jesus, who came to save the world from sin, sickness, and satanic bondage, will you not tell men and women about the afterlife? This book will reveal some unique information about the eternal destiny of the soul and the spiritual universe the way you perhaps have never read in any book. This material will help readers find some answers to these questions and much more. It is a must-read book that covers every aspect of afterlife experiences. We have looked at the subject from various Christian, Jewish, mystical, and secular viewpoints and find where the correct answers are seekers of truth. Only God knows the ultimate truth on this subject matter, and his divine authority and views are what we must all accept because he is our creator. Now in light of these facts, we must have an open mind as David Scot said: Truth is never afraid of the fullest investigation (David Walman Scot)

The Studies in the History and Culture of the Islamic Orient (STIO) is the series of “Supplements” to the journal Der Islam. Both are published by the Section for the History and Culture of the Near East in the Asian-African Institute of the University of Hamburg. The Section was established in 1908, before the foundation of the University of Hamburg. Under its first Director, C.H. Becker, it was the first academic centre in Germany in which teaching and research concentrated on the historical and cultural aspects of the Islamic world, and not just on philological issues. Many of Germany’s leading authorities in Islamic Studies have studied and/or taught here. The “Supplements” have maintained the same high quality and met the same high demands as the journal Der Islam and have published numerous studies on the history and culture of the Islamic world which have represented milestones in their relevant fields. The “New Series” of Supplements appearing since 2004 carries this tradition forward and provides a platform for publishing studies on the history and culture of the Islamic world from the beginnings of Islam up to the present day.
This book offers an incisive study on the important subject of destiny using the Holy Bible, which Christians revere as the revealed word of God. Following the Bible account, the book argues that human beings were created by God and that the Creator has a purpose for everyone he has made. It addresses such critical issues as the meaning of destiny from Gods perspective, popular misconceptions about destiny, and the Calvinist doctrine of predestination, broad types of destiny (natural destiny and supernatural destiny), Jesus Christ as the most important Bible personality that fulfilled destiny, as well as the roles of self, personal choice, natural circumstances, and the supernatural in ones destiny. Written with deep revelational interpretation of the Bible and in easy-to-read English, this book is an essential reading for all Christians, theologians, philosophers of religion, and indeed for everyone interested in understanding the purpose for their existence, including how to know and fulfill their divine destiny.
