Bridging the gap between higher education research and policy making was always a challenge, but the recent calls for more evidence-based policies have opened a window of unprecedented opportunity for researchers to bring more contributions to shaping the future of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Encouraged by the success of the 2011 first edition, Romania and Armenia have organised a 2nd edition of the Future of Higher Education – Bologna Process Researchers’ Conference (FOHE-BPRC) in November 2014, with the support of the Italian Presidency of the European Union and as part of the official EHEA agenda. Reuniting over 170 researchers from more than 30 countries, the event was a forum to debate the trends and challenges faced by higher education today and look at the future of European cooperation in higher education. Originally published in 1972 Diversity and Choice in Higher Education focuses on the diversity of institutions and the corresponding notion that students should be allowed to choose freely between them, regardless of distance from home. The book includes an exhaustive assessment of relevant research evidence, not only from Britain but also from the United States and other countries. The author examines such topics as the amount of diversity and choice permitted in the higher education systems of different countries, the extent to which the British system is diversified and the way in which students are distributed within it. He also explores certain hypotheses relating to the way pupils make their choice, examines critically the concept of matching students to institutions and discusses alternative models of student distribution.
If Black colleges and universities wish to survive in the competitive and economically stressed education environment of the 21st century, they would do well to respond to some of the pressures for reform that the general school structures are undergoing, in particular population diversification. Sims provides a model for diversification that presents four major steps in orderly progression: the removal of barriers for admission of nonblack students; the development of special programs of interest to the general student population; and the diversification of faculty and administration. Ways of restructuring historically Black colleges and universities to be more supportive of diverse student populations are also developed in this work.
The mass expansion of higher education is one of the most important social transformations of the second half of the twentieth century. In this book, scholars from 15 countries, representing Western and Eastern Europe, East Asia, Israel, Australia, and the United States, assess the links between this expansion and inequality in the national context. Contrary to most expectations, the authors show that as access to higher education expands, all social classes benefit. Neither greater diversification nor privatization in higher education results in greater inequality. In some cases, especially where the most advantaged already have significant access to higher education, opportunities increase most for persons from disadvantaged origins. Also, during the late twentieth century, opportunities for women increased faster than those for men. Offering a new spin on conventional wisdom, this book shows how all social classes benefit from the expansion of higher education.
