Excerpt from Discourses From the Pulpit The several Authors, to whom I am indebted, it is possible, may not, in every instance, be properly credited. If so, it has not been intentional. But it results from the fact, that in many instances, it was impossible for me to tell Whether the thought, or mode of expression, was my own, growing out of the inspiration of the sub ject, or received from some Author, read years ago, whose sentiments and language, I had made my own. This must serve as my apology, as it has been my inten tion, always, to give honor where honor was due. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Pulpit Discourses: Expository and Practical, and College Addresses, &C Having been much among Students, their benefit has been largely in the author's View, as well in the pulpit discourses which bulk so largely in the volume, as in the college addresses proper. He submits them with some humble confidence as illustrations of rules which he was wont to insist upon Not only would he show what he means by preaching Christ, in connection with whatever special subject, but by preaching the word. Excerpt from Modern Masters of Pulpit Discourse To-day and Yesterday. (that would in fact have been my own final choice of title; but I deferred to my publishers' preference of the alternative title which the book accordingly now bears.) I mention this circumstance to explain a turn of expression naturally suggested by it, that occurs in the opening of the paper devoted-to Mr. Moody, as also in the Opening of each one of the two papers following that, which conclude the series. Incorporated in the text of the last two papers will be found a statement of the warrant felt by the writer to exist for including examples from so long ago as are Jesus and Paul, in a list of subjects entitled, Modern Masters of Pulpit Discourse. Finally, the author, indulging the impulse he often feels to put his thought and his feeling into verse, has introduced at the end of his volume, a group of sonnets, which, if he has been successful in his attempt thus briefly to express, in metre and rhyme, the sum and spirit of his criticisms, the reader will find no difficulty in assigning, without the help of titles to guide him, to their respective subjects in the pages preceding. Excerpt from Academical Lectures and Pulpit Discourses, Vol. 2 Respecting the relations and consequences of the gospel remedy to other orders of creatures, we are almost entirely uninformed. The scripture gives some intimations on the subject, but they are few and indis tinct, and have been, not improperly, represented as presenting only a faint opening, through which may be seen some few traces of a wider and a nobler dispensa tion as bringing before us a dim transparency, on the other side of which the images of an obscure magnifi cence dazzle indistinctly upon the eye. Excerpt from Academical Lectures and Pulpit Discourses, Vol. 1 Of the interesting Memoir by the Rev. Dr henderson of Galashiels, which introduces these volumes, it is enough to say that it is worthy of the discriminating judgment, the classical taste, and the affectionate heart of its accomplished author, and will be admitted by all qualified judges to be an accurate, as well as a pleasing portrait, - a striking, yet not overcharged, likeness of his departed friend. Excerpt from The Princeton Pulpit The sermon of Dr. Archibald Alexander is probably the last complete discourse he ever prepared, and was delivered by him in the City of New York, at the instal lation of his son, the Rev. James W. Alexander, D.D. The friends of Prof. Dod have selected from his manu scripts a sermon, which from its subject, was one of his favourite discourses. Its devout and elevating sentiments, in regard to those things that are not seen, will doubt less be read with peculiar interest, now that he who uttered them, is no longer looking at those things, as through a glass, darkly, but face to face beholds them, with the Open vision of one of the Spirits of the just made perfect. Excerpt from Themes for the Pulpit: Being a Collection of Nearly Three Thousand Topics With d104s, Suitable for Public Discourses in the Pulpit and Lecture Room As this book furnishes nothing but Subjects and d104s, it is believed that, without affording any temptation or even facilities for being indolent, it will Often be of essen tial service to the preacher, by suggesting interesting and' important trams of thought which he will carry out inde pendently, and which will be wholly his own. Some Of the greatest and happiest efforts of the human mind have owed their origin to a single thought suggested by another mind, or to a striking text of Scripture. The intellectual powers are frequently stimulated to vigorous action upon the mere announcement of an interesting and appropriate theme. Excerpt from Discourses Preached on Several Occasions Dr. Sherlock no fooner ap peared in the great World, than he gave evident Proofs of the Extent Of his Learning and the Superiority Of his Genius. It has been Matter of Doubt with fome good Judges Of Style, whether the firfi of thefe Sermons, which he preached above feventy Years fince, when a young Man, has' been excelled, either in Language or Matter, by any' that he delivered from the Pulpit after wards. Excerpt from The Christian Minister in the Pulpit: An Inaugural Discourse If any man speak, let him Speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth that in all things God may be glorified, through Jesus Christ; to whom be praise and dominion forever and ever.
