Today, all of us with internet connections can access millions of digitized cultural artifacts from the comfort of our desks. Institutions and individuals add thousands of new cultural works to the digital sphere every day, creating new central nexuses of knowledge. How does this affect us politically and culturally? In this book, Nanna Bonde Thylstrup approaches mass digitization as an emerging sociopolitical and sociotechnical phenomenon, offering a new understanding of a defining concept of our time. Arguing that digitization has become a global cultural political project, Thylstrup draws on case studies of different forms of mass digitization—including Google Books, Europeana, and the shadow libraries Monoskop, lib.ru, and Ubuweb—to suggest a different approach to the study of digital cultural memory archives. She constructs a new theoretical framework for understanding mass digitization that focuses on notions of assemblage, infrastructure, and infrapolitics. Mass digitization does not consist merely of neutral technical processes, Thylstrup argues, but of distinct subpolitical processes that give rise to new kinds of archives and new ways of interacting with the artifacts they contain. With this book, she offers important and timely guidance on how mass digitization alters the politics of cultural memory to impact our relationship with the past and with one another.
This book explores the changes in political communication in light of the development of a public opinion mediated by web 2.0 technologies. One of the most important changes in political communication is related to the process of disintermediation, i.e. the process by which digital technologies allow citizens to compete in the public space with those agents who, traditionally, co-opted public opinion. However, while disintermediation has undeniably generated a number of advances, having linked citizens to the public debate, the authors highlight some aspects where disintermediation is moving away from a rational and inclusive public space. They argue that these aspects, related to the immediacy, polarization and incivility of the communication, obscure the possibilities for democratization of digital political communication.

Critical theory cannot say, today, what the rise of new technologies is changing for the socio-political order. By reducing the impact of digital technology to the specific interests of those who exploit it, the constructivist approach to technology only gives a segmental and tactical vision of its issues. Furthermore, if they indeed diagnose ruptures in practices and representations, epistemological analyzes of digital technology remain silent as to the structurally political dimension of these transformations, however radical. This thesis therefore proposes to articulate these critiques with an epistemic, unified postulate of the impact of digital transformation on the implicit theoretical framework which underlies the legitimacy (and even more profoundly, the condition of possibility) of liberal democracy. It puts the critical theory of technology into perspective using a classic approach to political theory, which consists of recalling the contingency and dependence of regimes on a certain social reality (relevant not only to practices but to symbolic, epistemic order that results from it).
