The increasing pressure from energy and environmental protection has made the research for sustainable electrical energy urgent. The integration of high-proportion renewable energy resources offers significant achievements for decreased carbon emissions and increased economic costs. This calls for new concepts of modelling, monitoring, planning, optimization, control, etc. Due to the complexity of electrical energy systems (EES), it is challenging to design effective and smart solutions. The emerging digital technologies may provide promising solutions owing to the successful development of artificial intelligence, blockchain, edge computing, 5g/6g, etc. Moreover, digital technologies facilitate the integration of cyber and physical systems, which further benefits the intelligent detection, coordination, and management of EESs. There are many challenges that require further research and development on policy, architecture, modelling, planning, operation, optimization, and control for sustainable EESs.

On 2 June 2022 in Stockholm, an UN-backed coalition of 1,000 stakeholders from over 100 countries launched an Action Plan to steer digitalization towards accelerating environmentally and socially sustainable development. The Coalition for Digital Environmental Sustainability aims to help reorient and prioritize the application of digital technologies to meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. Inspired by this Agenda, we have directed our research interest toward the search for approaches to sustainable digital transformation for the environment. This Research Topic is a part of our initiative at the annual international scientific conference ‘Digital Transformation in Industry’ (DTI), held by the Institute of Economics of the Ural Branc
In the digital age, smart grids stand as the backbone of modern energy systems, facilitating efficient energy distribution and management. However, this sophistication comes at the cost of heightened vulnerability to cyber threats. Standing on the precipice of a hyper-connected future, the inadequacies of current cybersecurity measures loom large, demanding urgent attention from academic scholars and industry experts. 5G and Fiber Optics Security Technologies for Smart Grid Cyber Defense addresses the challenges of securing smart grid systems through communication technologies. The book navigates through 5G wireless and fiber optics, offering a nuanced understanding of their application in the context of grid security. The book begins by exploring the inherent vulnerabilities in smart grid architecture and the imperative role of cybersecurity in modern energy systems. Subsequently, it delves into the specifics of 5G network architectures, dissecting the technologies and standards underpinning the new radio (NR) while emphasizing the significance of network slicing and security isolation. Concurrently, the book unveils the intricacies of fiber optic communication in smart grids, elucidating network design, security measures, and integrating fiber optic sensors for grid monitoring and intrusion detection.
International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Renewable Energetic Systems, IC-AIRES2019, 26-28 November 2019, Taghit-Bechar, Algeria. The challenges of the energy transition in the medium term lead to numerous technological breakthroughs in the areas of production, optimal distribution and the rational use of energy and renewable energy (energy efficiency and optimization of consumption, massive electrification, monitoring and control energy systems, cogeneration and energy recovery processes, new and renewable energies, etc.). The fall in the cost of renewable energies and the desire for a local control of energy production are today calling for a profound change in the electricity system. Local authorities are at the center of energy developments by taking into account the local nature of certain energy systems, heat networks, geothermal energy, waste heat recovery, and electricity generation from household waste. On the other side, digital sciences are at the heart of connected objects and intelligent products that combine information processing and communication capabilities with their environment. Digital technology is at the center of new systems engineering approaches (3D modeling, virtualization, simulation, digital prototyping, etc.) for the design and development of intelligent systems. The book deals with various topics ranging from the design, development and maintenance of energy production systems, transport, distribution or storage of energy, optimization of energy efficiency, especially in the use of energy. innovation in the fields of energy production from renewable energies, management of energy networks: electricity, fluids, gas, district heating, energy storage modes: battery, super-capacitors , overseeing energy supply through supervision, control and diagnosis, risk management, as well as the design and management of smart grids: microgrid, smartgrid. This imposes the model of energy empowerment in the advent of smart cities. Empower the world’s most vulnerable energy-poor citizens and establish growing and vibrant socioeconomic communities, by academics, students in engineering and data computing from around the world who have chosen an academic path leading to an electric power and energy engineering and artificial intelligence to advancing technology for the advantage of humanity.
Despite its crucial role in economic growth and societal development, infrastructure projects often fail to reach their full potential. In many cases, the benefits of infrastructure development do not trickle down to the most vulnerable populations, exacerbating inequalities and limiting overall impact. Additionally, the design and implementation of infrastructure reforms can sometimes worsen environmental pressures and spatial insecurity, highlighting the need for strategic approaches to infrastructure development. Infrastructure Development Strategies for Empowerment and Inclusion offers a comprehensive solution to these challenges. By delving into a broad range of ideas, strategies, and case studies, this book provides valuable insights for academics, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. It examines how infrastructure projects can be designed and implemented to empower marginalized groups, foster inclusivity, and stimulate equitable economic growth, thus maximizing their impact.
