The purpose of this work is to apply Hegelian dialectics to political economy. I will attempt to show that the application of this way of thinking allows us to understand the highly complex phenomenon that is the capitalist mode of production in a way which is not possible using static positivist thinking. There are many aspects to dialectical thinking, but crucial to this study of political economy will be that aspect of dialectics which emphasises Hegel's distinction between fundamental processes, or what could be called the essential relationships concealed below surface appearances, and those processes which are more immediately observable empirical "facts". As so little work is available on the subject of dialectics I begin, in chapter one, with a study of dialectical thinking which emphasises its ancient beginnings. The point is made that dialectics, with its insistence on change and totality, long predates the static categorisation of the world by Aristotle which is the basis of positivist thinking. It is clear that textbooks on political economy implicitly assume either a dualist separation of humanity and nature, or a naturalistic reductionism which states that ultimately the study of social relations can be reduced to the study of physics. Therefore the second chapter involves a critical examination of a number of positivist assumptions, such as the dualistic separation of nature and society and naturalistic reductionism. I will also examine natural science and technology in this second chapter, and in this context it will be argued that whilst humans are the highest manifestation of nature, we remain organically linked to all of nature.......
Dialectics and Contemporary Politics recasts dialectical thought for a post-Marxist age in which labour movement politics is just one political option among many. The book is organized thematically around concepts such as immanent critique, ideology, experience, and resistance, and according to figures who are vital to the present trajectory of dialectics, including Hegel, Adorno, Foucault, Jameson and Žizek. New analysis of these concepts and theorists is used to show how they transform our understanding of social life as well as offer a way of understanding social transformation. Interspersed throughout this theoretical work are dialectical examinations of political phenomena from tolerance, democracy, and the rise of Barack Obama, to state-economy relations as well as those of power and resistance. A radical and often revolutionary theory of society is pursued that is no longer confined to the terms of Marxism or any other school of thought. In this regard a novel advance is made by presenting the history of dialectical criticism as an ‘anti-tradition,’ which is defined as a practice that is characterized by a history of discontinuity, discord, and incompatible applications. Kosik writes that the history of a text is in a certain sense the history of its interpretations. In the fifteen years that have passed since the fust (Czech) edition of his Dialectics of the Concrete, this book has been widely read and interpreted throughout Europe, in diverse centers of scholarship as well as in private studies. A faithful English language edition is long overdue. This publication of KosIk's work will surely provoke a range of new interpretations. For its theme is the characterization of science and of rationality in the context of the social roots of science and the social critique which an appropriately rational science should afford. Kosik's question is: How shall Karl Marx's understanding of science itself be understood? And how can it be further developed? In his treatment of the question of scientific rationality, Kosik drives bluntly into the issues of gravest human concern, not the least of which is how to avoid the pseudo-concrete, the pseudo-scientific, the pseudo-rational, the pseudo historical.
