TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 752: Improved Mix Design, Evaluation, and Materials Management Practices for Hot Mix Asphalt with High Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Content describes proposed revisions to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) R 35, Superpave Volumetric Design for Hot Mix Asphalt, and AASHTO M 323, Superpave Volumetric Mix Design, to accommodate the design of asphalt mixtures with high reclaimed asphalt pavement contents.
Part 1: Summary of research results; Part 2: Mixture design method, construction guidelines, and quality control/quality assurance procedures
The primary objectives of this study were: (1) To evaluate the performance of stone mastic asphalt (SMA) mixes by performing fatigue tests, resilient modulus tests and creep tests; and (2) To input the resilient modulus, creep and fatigue data into the VESYS III-A pavement performance prediction model to determine the performance of the SMA mixes compared to the performance of the conventional, dense-graded asphalt mixes. Three surface course mixes were designed using the following mastic types: (1) Cellulose fibers; (2) Mineral fibers; and (3) Polymerized asphalt (Novophalt).
The report is concerned with a literature review of the use of large-stone mixtures (LSM). The specific topics of interest were the aggregate gradation, laboratory mixing methods, laboratory making of test specimens, and methods of test. A questionnaire on LSM was sent to all of the states and the responses are listed. Recommendations for the direction to be taken towards developing a LSM design procedure are presented.
