Ember Craven is a young girl raised by a single mother in a rough neighborhood in New York. To help make ends meet, she becomes entangled with a local gang, using her fists as the gang’s collector and her MMA training to participate in illegal fight rings, to pay the bills. When tragedy strikes, Ember’s world is turned upside down. She leaves behind the gang and fight cages for a life of wealth and luxury with her aunt and uncle in a small town in Canada. While grieving, Ember tries to change her life around and become a regular teenager in the sleepy town of Whitsborough. She experiences the ups and downs of being the new kid at school and makes friends that will last a lifetime. Only fate has other plans, and just when she thinks her life is perfect, the rug is pulled out from under her. Both worlds collide and Ember finds out that Whitsborough isn’t as pristine as it seems and her past is about to make an appearance in a devastating way. No secret stays buried forever, and Ember Craven is about to unearth one that will change her life forever.
Ember embraces her new persona, The Black Slaughter, and is ready to purge the small town of Whitsborough of its rotten core. With Vin, Emmett, Travis, and Adri by her side, they will work together to flush out the malignant growths within their town’s borders, even if it leaves a trail of blood in their wake. No one is safe, and nothing will come between Ember and her mission. Not even centuries-old secrets they unearth along the way. As Ember ticks off each name on her list, she uncovers a dark picture painted by the wealthy and prestigious founding families, and at the top of the list is hers. Money talks, immorality is masked by power, and Ember finds herself caught in a world where her resilience is often tested. After being pushed too far, she succumbs to her inner villain, and no one is safe from her blade, no matter how much money they have. Allies are masked enemies, and family becomes foe, and it’s up to Ember to decide if redemption is possible.
As Ember descends deeper into the dark and depraved void inside her, she continues to grapple with the shock of finding out about siblings she never knew existed. While her mother struggled to raise her as a single parent, she also kept a lot of secrets. Along with her grief, Ember buries her feelings under a mask of indifference as she tries to move on, hoping the blood staining her hands one day fades. Killing her father was her final act of revenge for the murder of her best friend, Tommy, but the nightmares plague her. As they become more frequent, she begins to lust for another kill. So starts her journey into the world of becoming a hired hitman, a job she’s hoping will satiate the bloodlust and provide her with the chance to pretend life is normal to the people around her. Ember joins the Head Corp, a company her father owned, and begins to accept contracts to kill the scum of New York. With Vin by her side, they uncover a new enemy, one a little too close to home. Ember is facing more tragic losses as she spirals once again into family secrets. When the seedy underbelly of Whitsborough is uncovered, she vows, once and for all, to rid her town of the rot that consumes it.
Sky I’ve been hit with a Cupid’s arrow, and I can’t seem to break free of its hold. No, not a Cupid. More like a Demon’s curse. He has me trapped, drowning in the deep brown of his irises. I’m confined and bound by the devilish smirk that lines his sinful mouth. No matter how hard my mind tries to convince me to leave, My heart begs to stay exactly where I am, A prisoner to Hail O’Brien. Hail I wish I never laid eyes on her, the girl whose face brings me nightmares of another. She’s a sinful package wrapped in an angel’s bow and I’m the Demon ripping it open. I tried to turn my back, to let her go but I’m too weak. I’ll use the excuse of protecting her to stick around but one day soon, She’ll be nothing but a distant memory, a name on a tombstone, Sky Martin.
Tempest Skeigh It’s addicting. The pull of a melodic beat as it teases your body into moving, The heat of your skin as it warms under the eyes filled with lustful intent, And the rush of your blood as you bare your soul. Dancing has always been my life, No matter if it’s on a pole or a stage. It was supposed to change my life and take me to better places. Instead, it threw me into his clutches and I can only hope to escape with minimal damage. Raiden James It’s addicting. The sounds vocal chords can make as they vibrate with song or scream, The tip of a sharpened blade as it sinks into flesh, And the gentle caress of blood as it coats your skin. Singing on stage has been my life, But the promises I made in exchange for fame are daunting. Now my vengeance is close at hand and my foes are lined up in a row. Then she drops in my lap and it takes everything in me not to slice her open, Just to coat my skin in her blood.
Life can be fickle and it can be rough. One minute you’re riding the high of an impossible win and the next your hands are wrapped around the bars of a cell. No matter your life’s accomplishments, once you hit rock bottom, you’re forgotten. If you’re no longer useful, you’re discarded. I ran my body and mind into the ground, pushed myself to greatness, and all for a game I would ultimately lose. What happens when you finally face your fears and jump into the abyss, only to find out you’re completely alone? The one person you’ve come to depend on disappears and your heart longs for the hunger only he can satisfy. There are no right answers and time doesn’t heal all wounds. How can love survive if it’s surrounded by hate?
Travis Greene has lived most of his life shrouded in fear and shadows. Fear of a father’s wrath, a mother’s disdain, and a coach’s attention. Love and intimacy came hand in hand with pain and disappointment, but he hid all of it deep inside the shadows of his damaged heart. Adrianna Hinton was the one bright light in his pitiful childhood, the sunshine to his cloudy days. She stood by him, endured his moods, until one terrible day when his life took a tragic turn. He pushed her away, felt like he didn’t deserve her love, and has been suffering the consequences ever since. Then Ember Craven forced her way into his life and heart, giving him the chance to have a real family, one that loves unconditionally. His heart began to heal, sealing up old wounds, and he found himself opening up to the idea of true love. But how do you choose between two people whose souls seem threaded together? Is it possible to have more than one soulmate? Emmett Torres and Adrianna Hinton are willing to give him the world, but each of them provides something different. When life throws Travis one last curveball, all of his newly formed bonds are tested. He hits rock bottom and sees no way to claw his way up from the pit he finds himself in. Just when he thinks he couldn’t sink any lower, he realizes… There’s always worse.
What happens when your only source of warmth and light leaves you? The dismal shadows once kept at bay, begin to seep back in and coat everything the light once touched. All feeling becomes saturated in their inky grasp and escape becomes impossible. She left me here in the dark, alone and awaiting the impending destruction. Who do you turn to when you feel all is lost? His presence isn’t welcomed, and his anger scorches my insides, but at least he never leaves. Now that I’m truly alone, his claws sink deep and trying to flee would be futile. We are one, him and I. There’s nothing I can do but watch the storm clouds roll in. How do I warn them if the warning is me? I can’t control him once he has something in his sights, his determination knows no bounds, and his wrath is an addiction I know too well. There’s no stopping the lightning if you don’t hear the thunder.
During the 872 days of the Siege of Leningrad (September 1941 to January 1944), the city's inhabitants were surrounded by the military forces of Nazi Germany. They suffered famine, cold, and darkness, and a million people lost their lives, making the siege one of the most destructive in history. Confinement in the besieged city was a traumatic experience. Unlike the victims of the Auschwitz concentration camp, for example, who were brought from afar and robbed of their cultural roots, the victims of the Siege of Leningrad were trapped in the city as it underwent a slow, horrific transformation. They lost everything except their physical location, which was layered with historical, cultural, and personal memory. In Besieged Leningrad, Polina Barskova examines how the city's inhabitants adjusted to their new urban reality, focusing on the emergence of new spatial perceptions that fostered the production of diverse textual and visual representations. The myriad texts that emerged during the siege were varied and exciting, engendered by sometimes sharply conflicting ideological urges and aesthetic sensibilities. In this first study of the cultural and literary representations of spatiality in besieged Leningrad, Barskova examines a wide range of authors with competing views of their difficult relationship with the city, filling a gap in Western knowledge of the culture of the siege. It will appeal to Russian studies specialists as well as those interested in war testimonies and the representation of trauma.
