Plutarch created a diverse range of works that have entertained generations of readers since the days of Imperial Rome. Plutarch's writings had an enormous influence on English and French literature. Plutarch was a Greek Middle Platonist philosopher, historian, biographer, essayist, and priest at the Temple of Apollo. He is known primarily for his Parallel Lives, a series of biographies of illustrious Greeks and Romans, and Moralia, a collection of essays and speeches.
The early sixth century historian Zosimus of Constantinople was conservative in his outlook, continuing to believe in the ancient pagan gods, even though he flourished more than a century after Constantine. His ‘New History’ offers a brief sketch of the history of the early Roman emperors from Augustus to Diocletian, before dealing more fully with the ascension of Constantius Chlorus and Galerius to the death of Theodosius I. The final books chart the events leading up to the sack of Rome in 410. Zosimus’ style is characterised as concise, clear and pure. His object was to account for the decline of the Roman Empire from the pagan point of view, blaming the rise of the new faith for the demise of the Roman world. Porphyry of Tyre was a third-century Neoplatonic philosopher and follower of Plotinus. He edited and published ‘The Enneads’, the only collection of his teacher’s work. Porphyry also wrote original works in Greek on a wide variety of topics, including philosophy, religion, vegetarianism, philology and science, while revealing a scholarly care in citing authorities. His influential work ‘Isagoge’, an introduction to logic and philosophy, was the standard textbook on logic throughout the Middle Ages. Surviving fragments of ‘Against the Christians’, which was condemned in 448 to be burned, marked him as a fierce critic of the new religion. An Athenian orator and statesman, Aeschines was the great rival of Demosthenes, being later ranked as one of the ten Attic orators. He advocated peace with Philip II of Macedonia, but was eventually defeated and discredited by Demosthenes. Aeschines then left Athens to set up a school of rhetoric at Rhodes. The first published African American poet, Jupiter Hammon was born into slavery in 1711 on Long Island, New York. Over the years he became a well-respected preacher and clerk-bookkeeper, as his poems were circulated widely. His poetry is composed in hymn stanzas and is noted for its rhythmic and passionate expression.
