Excerpt from Memorial Address at the Dedication of the Soldiers Monument, Maple Grove Cemetary, Randolph, New York Thucydides, writing of those who fell at Marathon, declared that the whole world is a mausoleum of those who die for the preservation of the liberties country. Though foul are the drops that oft distil On the field of warfare, blood like this For Liberty shed, so holy is, it would not stain the purest rill That sparkles among the bowers of bliss. Oh, if there be, on this earthly sphere, A boon, an offering Heaven holds dear, 'tis the last libation Liberty draws From the heart that bleeds and breaks in her cause. Through It All, a unique, intimate portrait of the Kings, one of America's most extraordinary families, is written as only a beloved elder sibling of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., could -- with insight, tenderness, and wisdom. Christine King Farris, the only sister of Dr. King and his brother, A.D., is the surviving member of the family that together stood for the rights of all Americans at the forefront of the civil rights movement. They come from a long line of African Americans in the South who combined education and conviction not only to survive against the odds but to make life better for themselves and those around them, especially the poor. She offers a rare opportunity to learn more about the man behind the myth -- as she describes, Martin Luther King was "no saint, ordained as such at birth. Instead, he was an average ordinary man, called by a God, in whom he had deep and abiding faith, to perform extraordinary deeds." The revelatory glimpses into her childhood with Dr. King are heartwarming. Her memories of, and insight into, her family's early years, including the brutal murder of their mother in church and the drowning of their youngest brother, are startling. Ms. Farris has led a fascinating life, not only as the sibling of one of America's most internationally celebrated leaders, but in her own right as a wife and mother, activist, and career educator who has put in more than fifty years of service at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Her children's book, My Brother Martin, was described by Kirkus Reviews as "a window to show Martin as a small boy in a loving extended family." Through It All, Christine King Farris's first memoir, opens doors to let readers of all ages into her life, her family, and the faith that allows her, in the ninth decade of her life, to still stand for all the principles that make America great.

Excerpt from Dedication of the Memorial Hall, in Dedham: September 29, 1868 Dear Sir, In behalf of the Committee of Arrangements, having in charge the dedication of the "Memorial Hall," Sept. 29th, 1868, I hereby present you their sincere thanks for your very able and eloquent Address on the occasion of said dedication; and request you to furnish the Committee with a copy for publication. Per order of the Committee. Dear Sir, Your courteous note of 8th October last, communicating the request of your Committee that a copy of the Address at the dedication of Memorial Hall, be furnished for publication, was duly received. I have delayed making any formal reply, because it has been understood by the Committee, that their request would be acceded to, so soon as the Address could be properly prepared with notes for publication. It seemed to me that the historical value of the Address would be much enhanced if the municipal acts of the town, and the associated efforts of individuals, during the war, which arc only alluded to, could be given more at length in an appendix. I have also, with the valuable aid of John D. Cobb, Esq., late Adjutant of the Thirty-Fifth Mass. Infantry, undertaken to give the record of those claiming a connection with Dedham, who entered the military and naval service during the war. The investigation and labor of this latter undertaking has caused some delay, but which has been justified by the result, as I trust. This record, though it may be found incomplete, has been made as accurate as known sources of reliable information could make it, and perhaps will be found valuable for future reference. With many thanks to your Committee for their kind indulgence, I now take great pleasure in placing the manuscript at their disposal.
