The papers contained in this volume were presented at ICDT’99, the 7th - ternationalConferenceonDatabaseTheory,inJerusalem,Israel,January10–12, 1999. ICDT is an international forum for research on the principles of database systems. It is a biennial conference, and has a tradition of being held in beau- ful European sites: Rome in 1986, Bruges in 1988, Paris in 1990, Berlin in 1992, Prague in 1995, and Delphi in 1997. From 1992, ICDT has been merged with another series of conferences on theoretical aspects of database systems, The Symposium on Mathematical Fundamentals of Database Systems (MFDBS), that was initiated in Dresden (1987), and continued in Visegrad (1989) and Rostock (1991). ICDT aims to enhance the exchange of ideas and cooperation in database research both within uni?ed Europe, and between Europe and the other continents. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Database Programming Languages, DBPL'99, held in Kinloch Rannoch, UK in September 1999. The 17 revised full papers presented together with an invited paper were carefully reviewed and revised for inclusion in the book. The book presents topical sections on querying and query optmization; languages for document models; persistence, components and workflows; typing and querying semistructured data; active and spatial databases; and unifying semistructured and traditional data models.

All scientific disciplines prize predictive success. Conventional statistical analyses, however, treat prediction as secondary, instead focusing on modeling and hence estimation, testing, and detailed physical interpretation, tackling these tasks before the predictive adequacy of a model is established. This book outlines a fully predictive approach to statistical problems based on studying predictors; the approach does not require predictors correspond to a model although this important special case is included in the general approach. Throughout, the point is to examine predictive performance before considering conventional inference. These ideas are traced through five traditional subfields of statistics, helping readers to refocus and adopt a directly predictive outlook. The book also considers prediction via contemporary 'black box' techniques and emerging data types and methodologies where conventional modeling is so difficult that good prediction is the main criterion available for evaluating the performance of a statistical method. Well-documented open-source R code in a Github repository allows readers to replicate examples and apply techniques to other investigations.
