Police work is heroic, dangerous, tragic, and stressful. It is also funny. I spent twenty years with the NYC Transit Police and NYPD and without a doubt, the funniest stories I ever heard were from cops. Cops can find something funny in almost anything, regardless of how dark or morbid. Dark humor is a necessary defense mechanism in policing. It allows police officers to cope with the insanity they deal with on a daily basis.
The New York City Subway has earned many unflattering nicknames. To the Transit Cops who patrolled this subterranean world it was simply - The Hole The Dark Knights series traces the author's law enforcement career to chronicle many of the interesting and often times funny situations encountered by police officers. Dark Knights 6 continues this exploration by focusing on a single day of patrol - in the hole.
In even the toughest of jobs, and in the harshest of environments, what else can we rely upon to get us through the day but our sense of humor? This is the fundamental premise behind Dark Knights 4 The Dark Humor of Police Officers: The Police Academy, a daring, illuminating, and deeply funny and sideways look at law enforcement in the USA, as well as at the eccentric and outrageous characters who work within and outside of the system. You might have thought that the distinctive, instantly recognizable, and world-weary dark humor possessed only by big city cops is the product of many, many years on the force. You might have thought that the jokes they tell, their sideways view of life, and their whole perspective on people, the system they work in, and where the world is heading comes about at some point between the peak of their career and the final stretch before retirement. You'd be wrong: it begins at police academy. Training to be a police officer, especially one preparing to patrol the mean streets of New York City, is one of the most physically and mentally exhausting processes anyone can go through. The shocks and surprises come thick and fast, and not everybody finds their way through to the other side or gets their badge at the end. As such, developing a sense of humor in line with your fellow officers - and a wit as quick as your instructors and superiors - isn't just a good idea to get ahead, it's essential for your survival on the job. From his work as a police academy instructor, patrol cop, and border patrol agent, Robert L. Bryan lifts the lid on the dark humor of the police force. By diving once again into the fray with yet another compendium, explores some of the oddest, funniest, and most memorable stories from his time working on the thin blue line.
When you think about great leaders, who comes to mind? Impactful figures like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., or perhaps Winston Churchill. In a huge organization like the New York City Police Department many great leaders have worn the uniform, particularly in the senior management ranks of captain and above. What leadership traits are required to become an NYPD captain. Is the ability to inspire and motivate required? Must these leaders possess vision to see the bigger picture? Do they need to possess empathy for their team members? Do NYPD leaders need to be innovative and creative? The answer is that NYPD captains need none of these leadership qualities. All they require are three lucky Saturdays.
The police are seen as many things to many people; protectors, law enforcers, upstanding citizens, but rarely, if ever, are they seen as funny. However, when one stops to think about it for a second, it becomes clear that police officers must come across some of the craziest, most eccentric, and most unexpected aspects of everyday society as a fundamental part of their job. If only a police officer with a sense of humor decided to write some of their best stories down...? That's exactly what Robert L. Bryan does best. As a former NYC cop, Bryan's been in the thick of it for most of his career, treading the thin blue line between civility and chaos. Along the way, he's come across some seriously bizarre characters, and some even more bizarre situations. Sometimes, a man has just got to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all, and with his talent for turning a phrase and spinning a good yarn, Dark Knights 3: The Dark Humor of Police Officers spins plenty of hilarious shaggy dog stories which range from the horrifyingly funny to the downright weird. ? Dark Knights 3: The Dark Humor of Police Officers manages to not just be a fantastic piece of light entertainment for those curious about the laughs within the force, it also offers a truly fascinating insight into some of the more unexpected aspects of the job. What happens when inexperienced police officers are put in front of a riot, and are told to act as if they were seasoned professionals? Where do most police officers' breaking points lie? Do male and female police officers react differently to different situations... and what happens if and when they do? This darkly funny and somewhat twisted collection of tales and memories will not only make you laugh, it will also get you thinking about the role the police have in society today, and where the force needs reform, reevaluation, and outright applause.
Police Officers are the modern day embodiment of medieval knights, going to work each day with a noble cause to protect and serve society. The profession requires cops to see people at their worst. They see death, tragedy, crime, and despair on a daily basis. The very nature of the tasks cops perform and the things cops see skews their sense of humor. Sometimes, a sense of humor is the only defense mechanism in a police officer's tool box. Stripped of the ability to laugh, or forced to be politically correct in a politically incorrect work environment can be hazardous to one's health. Coping becomes an essential component of a police officer's arsenal. One of the primary coping mechanisms utilized by cops is humor. A cop can find something funny about almost anything, regardless of how tragic the circumstances. Dark humor involves making light of a serious, disturbing or taboo subject matter. It is sometimes viewed as morbid, cruel, offensive, and graphic in nature and is yet, still found funny. This is the story of the author's twenty-year police career with the New York City Transit Police and NYPD as he worked with some of New York City's darkest knights - those cops who did and said the funniest things under the most difficult circumstances.

Police Officers are not the only force protecting the citizenry. For over 80% of the critical infrastructure in the United States, the first line of defense is a private security officer. Private security shares many similarities with policing, but in too many instances security officers are not recognized as the protectors and upstanding citizens that they are. Another commonality between police officers and security officers is that rarely, if ever, are they seen as funny. However, when one stops to think about it for a second, it becomes clear that police officers are not alone in encountering some of the craziest, most eccentric, and most unexpected aspects of everyday society as a fundamental part of their job. Security officers also experience the strange, bizarre, and funny on a regular basis. Author Robert L. Bryan is in a unique position to comment on the dark humor found in both occupations. As a former NYPD Captain, Bryan has written extensively in the Dark Knights series about the strange and humorous situations and people he encountered throughout his career. In Dark Knights 5 Bryan shares the equally funny stories from his experience in the world of private security and while conducting security training classes. This book examines political humor as a reaction to the lost war, the post-war chaos, and antisemitic violence in Hungary between 1918 and 1922. While there is an increased body of literature on Jewish humor as a form of resistance and a means of resilience during the Holocaust, only a handful of studies have addressed Jewish humor as a reaction to physical attacks and increased discrimination in Europe during and after the First World War. The majority of studies have approached the issue of Jewish humor from an anthropological, cultural, or linguistic perspective; they have been interested in the humor of lower- or lower-middle-class Jews in the East European shtetles before 1914. On the other hand, this study follows a historical and political approach to the same topic and focuses on the reaction of urban, middle-class, and culturally assimilated Jews to recent events: to the disintegration of the Dual Monarchy, the collapse of law and order, increased violence, the reversal of Jewish emancipation and the rise of new and more pernicious antisemitic prejudices. The study sees humor not only as a form of entertainment and jokes as literature and a product of popular culture, but also as a heuristic device to understand the world and make sense of recent changes, as well as a means to defend one’s social position, individual and group identity, strike back at the enemy, and last but not least, to gain the support and change the hearts and minds of non-Jews and neutral bystanders. Unlike previous scholarly works on Jewish resistance during the Holocaust, this study sees Budapest Jewish humor after WWI as a joint adventure: as a product of urban and Hungarian culture, in which Jewish not only played an important role but also cofounded. Finally, the book addressed the issue of continuity in Hungarian history, the "twisted road to Auschwitz": whether urban Jewish humor, as a form of escapism, helped to desensitize the future victims of the Holocaust to the approaching danger, or it continued to play the same defensive and positive role in the interwar period, as it had done in the immediate aftermath of the Great War.
