The title Descent into Darkness came to me several months before I started to work on the book. I felt inspired to write about a particular transition in my life at midlife. With several questions about my true purpose in life, my life path had come up. And I felt I needed to dive deep into unknown waters of emotion, desire, fear, and pain in order to find the answers. I had an intuitive sense that I was slightly off track and that something deep inside of me was not touched, and I felt something big missing in my life. I have decided to take the lid off and dive into the invisible, the unknown, and take the risks of either falling off the abyss or finding true freedom. I have found that writing has been my only way to stay sane in this process. And so I birthed this book.
This Companion offers fresh insight into the art and politics of James Baldwin, one of the most important writers and provocative cultural critics of the twentieth century. Black, gay, and gifted, he was hailed as a 'spokesman for the race', although he personally, and controversially, eschewed titles and classifications of all kinds. Individual essays examine his classic novels and nonfiction as well as his work across lesser-examined domains: poetry, music, theatre, sermon, photo-text, children's literature, public media, comedy, and artistic collaboration. In doing so, The Cambridge Companion to James Baldwin captures the power and influence of his work during the civil rights era as well as his relevance in the 'post-race' transnational twenty-first century, when his prescient questioning of the boundaries of race, sex, love, leadership, and country assume new urgency.
The rule of Jesus articulated in Matthew's Gospel is neither obscure nor archaic. Jesus' imperatives speak powerfully to the contemporary issues of our day, and do so by illuminating a way of clarity, simplicity, and love. Where populism demands separation, Jesus promotes unity; where institutionalism extols hierarchical power, Jesus encourages humble service; where individualism lauds immediate gratification, Jesus asserts the path of sacrificial love. Indeed, as the Gospel of Matthew lays out, the pathway that Jesus defines is one of awareness, self-knowledge, and personal growth. It is a way of generativity, fruitfulness, and abundance. As we travel with Jesus in intimate conversation, we walk the line in a rhythm that fosters advancement, enjoyment, and soulful acceptance.
Botting expertly introduces the transformations of the gothic through history, discussing key figures such as ghosts, monsters and vampires, as well as tracing its origins, characteristics, cultural significance and critical interpretations.
I’m told the man I’m to marry is a psychopath. He doesn't feel. They say it’s a good thing, no feeling means no anger for me to fear. Except they don’t see the flip side. If he can’t feel, he can never love. He saved me by ending my boyfriend who refused to take no for an answer. Only Manuel Rodriguez is no savior. He’s the lethal enforcer of the all-powerful Rodriguez cartel. His father and brother handle their drugs and money. Manuel handles their death and destruction. I wasn’t supposed to be there. I’m a good girl. I was raised to be a perfect mafia princess, destined to be the wife of a powerful mafia capo. My rebellion against my destiny culminated in me thanking him on my knees. And ended the moment I was back on my feet. For Manuel, my way of thanking him wasn’t enough. He needs a mother for his children. I need to protect my mother and myself from my father’s misdeeds. Now one question remains: Can a marriage without love and made of lies survive? Because I lied when I told myself I married him to protect my mother. Only when we transform our minds can we break the chains of our mental enslavement and find true liberation from our misperceptions about race, crime, and justice. Social commentators and scholars have presented numerous theories on these topics. But while all lament the horrors associated with discrimination and racism, few so far have proposed a viable way to escape these sufferings. By taking a critical look at the writings of novelists, social commentators, and scholars in the fields of sociology, criminology, criminal justice, black studies, philosophy, and law, Professor Leon E. Pettiway presents a series of essays that provide a path that liberates us from these sufferings. In doing so, he provides a unique perspective that reframes the social realities of racial membership and institutional racism in the US and how they impact our perceptions of crime and justice. Buddhism and race are essential elements of these discussions, but Pettiway’s commentary is also informed by an Afrocentric perspective. In these ways, Pettiway examines our thoughts concerning race, the causes of crime, and the administration of justice. He uses these frameworks to demonstrate how our current modes of thinking reinforce and perpetuate white supremacy, influence our scholarly endeavors, and frame today’s public policies and social agendas. In Only for the Brave at Heart: Essays Rethinking Race, Crime, and Justice, readers will: (1) learn new ways of thinking that can liberate our world from injustice (2) assess the ways we create the realities of race, crime, and justice (3) explore how love and compassion lead to meaningful actions that can reduce human suffering Pettiway has spent his career as an academic and Buddhist monk reflecting on and writing about the African-American experience. Only for the Brave at Heart attempts to create an intellectual movement that reimagines how we think about the perceived differences that fracture our society and disenfranchise so many. In the end, Only for the Brave at Heart is a critique and commentary on social justice. This powerful collection of essays about discrimination and racism will prove to be one of the most important books about race in America today.
This "blistering anti-romance" (Catherine Lacey) paints a riveting, cathartic story about love addiction and what it does to us. Wouldn’t I do anything to reverse my loss, the absence of him? In the first scene of this provocative gut-punch of a novel, our unnamed narrator meets a magnetic writer named Ciaran and falls, against her better judgment, completely in his power. After a brief, all-consuming romance he abruptly rejects her, sending her into a tailspin of jealous obsession and longing. If he ever comes back to her, she resolves to hang onto him and his love at all costs, even if it destroys her… Part breathless confession, part lucid critique, Acts of Desperation renders a consciousness split between rebellion and submission, between escaping degradation and eroticizing it, between loving and being lovable. With unsettling, electric precision, Nolan dissects one of life’s most elusive mysteries: Why do we want what we want, and how do we want it? Heralding the arrival of a stunning new literary talent, Acts of Desperation interrogates the nature of fantasy, desire, and power, challenging us to reckon honestly with our own insatiability.
