Dante engaged with an extraordinary range of traditions, disciplines and media, and a variety of speech-communities, cultures, genres and media have received his work: from Spain, France and Germany to North America and the Indian sub-continent; and from medieval multilingualism and early modern humanism to contemporary politics, translations and databases. Those multiple contexts and this prolific afterlife form the subject of the book's 27 essays, which have been commissioned from an international group of scholars to mark the 2021Dante centenary. Contributors include members of several historic Dante Societies: The Dante Society of America, (founded 1881); the Deutsche Dante-Gesellschaft (founded 1865); and the Oxford Dante Society (founded 1876); and their essays present a variety of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approaches to a major transnational poet. Jonathan Katz is a Fellow of St Anne's College and Public Orator at the University of Oxford. This volume is centred around the idea that the aim of literature is to build bridges, to bring people together, and to highlight underlying similarities despite the apparent differences in world literatures. As such, the book focuses on the moral purpose of literature and its tendency to overcome divisive forces. It supports the idea of cosmopolitanism, a re-working of the ancient Indian ideal of Vasudhaiva Kuttumbakam, or ‘the world is my home’, a concept close to the African notion of ‘ubuntu’, which refers to an open society (as against a small, enclosed one) and relates to the essence of being human and working for the benefit of a larger community. The book uses examples from texts across geographical and cultural borders, beginning with classics like the Indian epics, the Panchatantra, the Kathasaritsagar, and the Arabian Nights, before moving on to contemporary texts in the age of information technology. Although these may originate against diverse backdrops, they have a commonality that cannot be denied. The stories we tell, the tales we love to hear and repeat, all share certain features which reach out across boundaries of time and space, thus bridging the gap between people and places. Living in today’s globalized world, there is a need to study literature in a broader perspective and to be aware that, though stories may be rooted in a particular time and place, they are still a part of the world heritage and comprise what is called world literature. The book will be of particular interest to scholars studying the art of storytelling, as well as the lay reader passionate about literature.
The essays collected here join in, and contribute to, the current reflection on Dante’s vitality today in a critical, multidisciplinary vein. On January 1, 1994 in the far southeast of Mexico, a guerrilla army of indigenous Mayan peasants calling itself the Zapatista Army of National Liberation rose up in rebellion against 500 years of colonialism, imperialism, genocide, racism, and neoliberal capitalism. Zapatismo Beyond Borders examines how Zapatismo, the political philosophy of the Zapatistas, crossed the regional and national boundaries of the isolated indigenous communities of Chiapas to influence diverse communities of North American activists. In fourteenth-century Italy, literacy became accessible to a significantly larger portion of the lay population (allegedly between 60 and 80 percent in Florence) and provided a crucial means for the vernacularization and secularization of learning, and for the democratization of citizenship. Dante Alighieri's education and oeuvre sit squarely at the heart of this historical and cultural transition and provide an ideal case study for investigating the impact of Latin education on the consolidation of autonomous vernacular literature in the Middle Ages, a fascinating and still largely unexamined phenomenon. On the basis of manuscript and archival evidence, Gianferrari reconstructs the contents, practice, and readings of Latin instruction in the urban schools of fourteenth-century Florence. It also shows Dante's continuous engagement with this culture of teaching in his poetics, thus revealing his contribution to the expansion of vernacular literacy and education. The book argues that to achieve his unprecedented position of authority as a vernacular intellectual, Dante conceived his poetic works as an alternative educational program for laypeople, who could read and write in the vernacular but had little or no proficiency in Latin. By reconstructing the culture of literacy shared by Dante and his lay readers, Dante's Education shifts critical attention from his legacy as Italy's national poet, and a "great books" author in the Western canon, to his experience as a marginal intellectual engaged in advancing a marginal culture.
