Kay and Danny are faithfully serving God as missionaries in Guatemala. While Danny is out clearing ground for an airplane landing strip, Kay is asked to make an urgent medical visit upriver in the jungle. On the way back to the mission station, Kay shows signs of heatstroke, and Danny and Kay must return to Minnesota for Kay's recovery. While in Minnesota, Kay receives bad news from the doctor that doesn’t make sense. Even though she feels fine, she's told that she shouldn’t return to Guatemala. Why would God allow this to happen when they are so needed in Guatemala?
Ron and Roxie, Danny's adopted twin brother and sister, are pleasantly surprised when their Uncle Harold shows up. But all is not fun and games. Uncle Harold is determined to take custody of the twins, and when the court system doesn't move quickly enough, he takes matters into his own hands. Kidnapped, Ron and Roxie must keep their wits about them in order to escape before their sinister uncle drags them across the border into Canada. An attempt to call for help fails, but the Lord answers their prayers in a different way.
When fire destroys his school in a remote Minnesota village, Danny must attend a strange school in a town many miles from his family. In spite of homesickness, Danny refuses to stay lonely. The basketball court provides the ideal place for making new friends. When poor grades threaten the team, Danny’s new friend, Kevin, the computer whiz, finds himself uniquely qualified to help. Will he decide to break the law so that he will no longer be an outsider? Only Kevin can make this decision, and only Danny can make the truth known.

Then, Linda finds a "friend" in a rather rebellious boy named Jack. Things take a turn for the worse when she starts lying to Danny and Kay to spend more time with Jack, justifying her actions due to her unfortunate circumstances. The situation comes to a head when Jack is pulled over by the police.
Jack Ross is a troubled yet irresistibly charismatic upperclassman. Despite her parents' warnings about the dangers of dating an unsaved boy, Linda Penner finds herself magnetically drawn to him. Meanwhile, Kent Gilbert, even though he lived with the Orlises, gets entangled in Jack’s gang of thieves. But when their world falls apart, both Kent and Linda must confront their choices. They discover who their true friends are and what complete surrender to Christ means.
