First published in 1996. This comparative study investigates thematic and technical similarities in the works of the two authors who shared a cultural heritage and achieved comparable status in their separate literary traditions. Drawing upon theories by Bloom, Bakhtin, and Lacan, the book examines ways in which Henry James and Thomas Mann treat the creative artist and analyze the creative and interpretive processes in their fiction. The texts covered range from early works to their great modern novels: The GoldenBowland Doctor Faustus To a great extent, the similarities between the works stem from the authors' preoccupation with artistic responsibility. Adopting Bloom's claim that the creative activity is an interpretive one, and that the reader, as well as the writer, interprets a text into being the book also investigates the reader's responsibility in confronting the dilemmas challenging James' and Mann's artist figures. Such challenges are "the dangers of interpretation" discussed in this book. Index. Bibliography.
Fans of Bridgerton will fall in love with Julia London’s New York Times bestselling “witty, spicy, and funny” (Library Journal) Desperate Debutantes trilogy, in which three aristocratic sisters, upon discovering they are destitute, resort to desperate means to keep up appearances...and find the husbands of their dreams. The young ladies of the Fairchild family have just learned that their stepfather has absconded with their late mother’s fortune. Ava, the eldest, decides to take matters into her own hands and hunts down the notoriously wealthy rakehell Jared Broderick, the Marquis of Middleton and heir to a dukedom. Much to her shock and delight, the marquis sweeps her into a whirlwind romance and proposes marriage. But after their passionate wedding night, Ava discovers Jared has ulterior motives of his own. Not only does he expect her to deliver an heir while he continues to enjoy a rogue’s life, but Ava also suspects she is a pawn in her husband’s quest for revenge. Marriages of convenience might work for some, but for Ava, a loveless bond won’t do. So she devises a bold plan to confront her husband’s demons so that he will be free to give her his heart for the right reason: because she is the only woman he will ever truly desire.
Sanger Rainsford is a big-game hunter, who finds himself washed up on an island owned by the eccentric General Zaroff. Zaroff, a big-game hunter himself, has heard of Rainsford’s abilities with a gun and organises a hunt. However, they’re not after animals – they’re after people. When he protests, Rainsford the hunter becomes Rainsford the hunted. Sharing similarities with "The Hunger Games", starring Jennifer Lawrence, this is the story that created the template for pitting man against man. Born in New York, Richard Connell (1893 – 1949) went on to become an acclaimed author, screenwriter, and journalist. He is best remembered for the gripping novel "The Most Dangerous Game" and for receiving an Oscar nomination for the screenplay "Meet John Doe".
Danger: Diabolik (1968) was adapted from a comic that has been a social phenomenon in Italy for over fifty years, featuring a masked master criminal—part Fantômas, part James Bond—and his elegant companion Eva Kant. The film partially reinvents the character as a countercultural prankster, subverting public officials and the national economy, and places him in a luxurious and futuristic underground hideout and Eva in a series of unforgettable outfits. A commercial disappointment on its original release, Danger: Diabolik's reputation has grown along with that of its director, Mario Bava, the quintessential cult auteur, while the pop-art glamour of its costumes and sets have caught the imagination of such people as Roman Coppola and the Beastie Boys. This study examines its status as a comic-book movie, including its relation both to the original fumetto and to its sister-film, Barbarella. It traces its production and initial reception in Italy, France, the U.S., and the UK, and its cult afterlife as both a pop-art classic and campy "bad film" featured in the final episode of Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
People hunting people for sport--an idea both shocking and fascinating. In 1924 Richard Connell published a short story that introduced this concept to the world, where it has remained ever since--as evidenced by the many big- and small-screen adaptations and inspirations. Since its publication, Connell's award-winning "The Most Dangerous Game" has been continuously anthologized and studied in classrooms throughout America. Raising questions about the nature of violence and cruelty, and the ethics of hunting for sport, the thrilling story spawned a new cinematic subgenre, beginning with RKO's 1932 production of The Most Dangerous Game, and continuing right up to today. This book examines in-depth all the cinematic adaptations of the iconic short story. Each film chapter has a synopsis, a "How Dangerous Is It?" critique, an overall analysis, a production history, and credits. Five additional chapters address direct to video, television, game shows, and almost "dangerous" productions. Photographs, extensive notes, bibliography and index are included.

Although the construction industry employs only five percent of the nation's work force, it suffers 20 percent of the nation's occupational fatalities and 12 percent of all U.S. injuries. Because of this the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has consolidated their construction standards, compliance assistance, cooperative programs, and technical services to form the Directorate of Construction. Construction sites and operations have become the prime targets for the Directorate of Construction, which has greatly increased its number of inspections, citations and penalties. The Handbook of OSHA Construction Safety and Health is for safety professional, contractor, project manager and owner who has the responsibility of implementing an effective on-site safety and health program. These professionals are now in charge of everything from the safe operation of equipment to the safe removal of hazardous waste from the construction site. It is a practical guide that can be used by the construction industry on existing and future projects and jobsites in the critical area of occupational safety and health. Written using OSHA's Construction standards as a framework, the book provides those responsible for construction safety and health with a definitive guide for eliminating safety and health hazards from construction worksites. In addition, the handbook addresses subjects such as contractor liability, multi-employer sites and focused inspection which are real and time problem areas faced by the construction industry. The Handbook of OSHA Construction Safety and Health contains a model safety and health program, examples of accident analysis and prevention approaches, sample safety and health checklist and forms, and over 300 illustrations.
