Excerpt from Miller's Exquisite Dahlias and Gladioli, 1927: The World's Finest Varieties Marmion. This new Dahlia is truly a giant for size. The flowers in my display garden this past season grew 12 to 14 inches across without disbudding and without receiving any other special attention, except good cultivation. The huge blooms are of perfect for mation, with long wavy petals which curl in such a fashion as to eliminate any hint of coarseness. Excerpt from Gladiolus, Dahlias, Roses, Perennials, Ornamentals, 1927 Culture: Dahlias will thrive in any soil that will produce a good crop of potatoes. They grow best in a sunny location. The soil should be spaded deep. Do not use fertilizer at planting time. The tubers should be set three feet apart each way. Dig a hole six inches deep and lay the tuber flat in the bottom, eye si-de up. Drive a stout stake near the eye at time of planting. Fill the hole about half full of soil. When the plant has made two pair of leaves, pinch out the top above the second pair. Cutivate thoroughly, gradually filling in the hole. When buds appear, pinch out all but one on a stem and also the next pair or two of shoots below the bud. This practice of pinching out the top and the buds makes a dwarfer and bushier plant with large flowers on long stems suitable for cutting and exhibition. Keep the plants well watered during the dry sea son. After frost has killed the plant, cut the top off close to the ground, dig carefully and store on a dry, cool place free from frost. It is better to turn the clump with stem end down in storage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Beauty From Bulbs: Spring 1927 Dahlias, Gladioli, etc., given in this cata logue represent a deliberate and earnest effort to offer only the very choicest varieties. Dah lias that produce weak stems and hanging heads have been excluded, no matter how beautiful the shape and color of the flower it self. We have Omitted also many varieties which, though beautiful, too closely resemble others of even greater beauty or better quality. We are confident that these lists, short though they be, present the best in the Gladi olus, Montbretia and Dahlia world, and in this belief we submit them to the most dis criminating gardeners.
