Carlos Cruz-Diez: Colour Happens is the title of the first individual Spanish exhibition, an official institution, dedicated to the work of Carlos Cruz-Diez (Caracas, 1923). His work has been present in the greatest European exhibitions dedicated to Kinetic Art since the 60's, as well as in the most important collective exhibitions devoted to Latin American art. Carlos Cruz-Diez has work many of the most dignified museums worldwide, including, Muse National d'Art Modern Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, of which loaned works of Cruz-Diez for this exhibition, as with the private Foundation Allegro, the Altelier Cruz-Diez and MUGAB (Diputation of Alicante).
This book is the result of decades of conversations between curator Ariel Jiménez and the Venezuelan kinetic artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. Their discussions provide compelling insights into Cruz-Diez's lifelong search to dematerialize color.
One of the finest exponents of Latin American Kinetic and Op art, the Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez (born in 1923) is a legend among contemporaries such as Jesus Soto and Alejandro Otero--and across Latin America and Europe--but has been woefully little exhibited in North America. Those who caught the groundbreaking 2007 traveling exhibition The Geometry of Hope will recall Cruz-Diez's standout contributions, which had viewers bumping into one another as they negotiated the color shifts and sensations of motion that his sculptural constructions induced. A pioneer in color theory and color perception, Cruz-Diez solicits physical participation in his audience. In late 2008, the Americas Society, known for its leading role in presenting innovative site installations by artists such as Gego, Lygia Pape and Pedro Reyes, orchestrated Cruz-Diez's first solo exhibition in the United States, for which Carlos Cruz Diez: InFormed by Color is the exhibition catalogue--the first comprehensive publication in English devoted to the artist.
This book examines pioneering Latin American kinetic artists who helped develop kinetic art into an international movement. Kinesthesia: Latin American Kinetic Art, 1954-1969 examines the influential and visually stunning work of South American kinetic artists. While Southern California was becoming the North American epicenter for Light and Space art in the 1960s, separate yet closely related technical experiments had been unfolding in a handful of major cities of South America, as well as in Paris, the European center for kinetic art. Kinesthesia highlights the broad differences that emerged among the two principal South American centers of activity: Argentina, where kinetic art grew out of local debates about painting; and Venezuela, where pioneering notions of modern architecture stimulated a synthesis of art and design. Featured in this volume are kinetic sculptures and installations by Jesús Rafael Soto, Julio Le Parc, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Martha Boto, and others, as well as essays that explore the history of this movement, examine the artists' reception by European and American audiences in the context of the Cold War, and link their achievements to 21st-century artists and their work.
