Now they both must pull together before it’s too late; to either bow at Dragon Eddie’s feet, or join sides to take him down and collect their dues. What the both of them seem to forget is that this is not Eddie’s first pistol showdown at dawn, and neither is it the first time that someone has threatened to take away what is most precious to him. When the smoke clears, it’s hard to tell who’s still standing in this old school versus new school battle. If it is the more experienced man who has seen and done all there is to see and do, who wins. If it’s the newcomer who is full of vigor and short of mercy, who wins. It would be nothing short of a pity and a shame if lovesick Cara Mia is caught in the middle and meets an early fate, all in the name of love and peace. That’s what you get when you’re obsessed with a savage and the sworn enemy of your own father. You’re introduced to more troubles than you can bear, and you’re facing a loaded barrel held in the hand of your own father.

Nelson Algren was a renowned Chicago writer known for his social commentary and his novels like The Man with the Golden Arm and A Walk on the Wild Side. Although he continues to be remembered almost exclusively for his novels, this book aims to highlight the value and influence of his short form works. Before he died in 1981, Algren had amassed a genre-defying body of work, including short stories, articles, poems and book reviews. The present book features a comprehensive analysis and discussion of Algren's lost literature, including everything but his novels. One of the pieces covered is a masterpiece of race relations written in 1950, more than 60 years before the galvanization of the Black Lives Matter movement. Another is a scathing poem about Algren's transatlantic love affair with Simone de Beauvoir. Both items are reprinted in the book courtesy of the Algren estate. This book also includes references to Algren's works that have yet to be studied by Algren scholars.

00 Edgar Degas traveled from Paris to New Orleans during the fall of 1872 to visit the American branch of his mother's family, the Mussons. This war-torn, diverse, and conflicted city elicited from Degas some of his finest paintings. He arrived at a key moment in the cultural history of this most exotic of American cities, still recovering from the agony of the Civil War. This decisive period of Reconstruction, in which his American relatives were importantly involved, was also the time when the American writers Kate Chopin and George Washington Cable were beginning to mine the resources of New Orleans culture and history.
