Craft lives inside the artist, and it operates in the mind, not in standards or techniques. Creative writers navigate thresholds in consciousness as they develop their arts practice. Craft Consciousness and Artistic Practice in Creative Writing explores what it is to be an artist as it traces radical, feminist, and culturally embedded traditions in craft. The new term "craft consciousness" identifies the nexus from which writers explore making processes and practitioner knowledge. Writers, as with all artists, create and reimagine themselves anew, and it is in this perpetual state of becoming that they find ways to enlarge their sense of artistry through an exploration of forms, processes, and mediums beyond the written word. For writers, this book initiates a reexamination of the mission of creative writing through disrupting patriarchal, racist, colonialist, ableist, and capitalist associations with dominant craft. Drawing from twenty-five interviews with living artists outside of writing and in a host of fields from conceptual art to leatherwork and dance, the book shines a light on how the processes associated with craft are embodied. Craft is an internalized matrix; it need not be commodified for the marketplace or codified in the standards necessitated by institutions of higher education. By redesigning writing workshops and MFA/PhD programs through craft consciousness, new potentials and collaborations emerge, and it becomes more conceivable to imagine dynamic, inclusive relationships between writers, scientists, and other artists.

To describe what has been learned about craft membership organizations is the goal of this research report, which utilizes data collected in a nationwide survey of craft organizations. Specific purposes of the study were aimed at developing a better understanding of U.S. craft artists and organizations. Findings indicated that a typical craft organization has existed for 10 years, has 90 local members, is involved in exhibits, sales, and workshops, is a nonprofit corporation, and has an annual budget of $3,500. Not all of its members work in the same medium, but a majority work with clay or fiber mediums. The largest number of the estimated 1,218 U.S. organizations is located in the east north central states, while the highest number of artists resides in New England and the eastern south central states. Over 60 percent of the responding organizations are involved in more than one craft medium. Jury review as a prerequisite to membership is imposed by 30 percent of craft organizations. Provided services and activities are frequently available to the general public, while special functions and publications tend to be oriented toward members. Most of these organizations perceive themselves as having few serious problems; there is also evidence that accelerated formation of crafts organizations occurred 5 to 10 years ago and that the current tendency is toward consolidation, rather than expansion. Culture is not simply an explanation of last resort, but is itself a rich, multifaceted and contested concept and set of practices that needs to be expanded, appreciated and applied in fresh ways if it is to be both valued in itself and to be of use in practical development.
