Artworks, essays and poetry explore the racial implications of capitalist temporalities In 2019, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania presented the experimental exhibition Colored People Time. Divided into three chapters--Mundane Futures, Quotidian Pasts, Banal Presents--it used the Black vernacular phrase "Colored People's Time" (CPT) to explore the ways that dominant notions of time have been used to control and condemn Black people. CPT names a political performance by Black people to evade and ridicule the enforcement of punctuality and productivity. Funk the Clock is about those said to be emblematic of the future yet denied a place in time. Hence, this book is both an invitation and provocation for Black youth to give the finger to the hands of time, while inviting readers to follow their lead. In revealing how time is racialized, how race is temporalized, and how racism takes time, Rahsaan Mahadeo makes clear why conventional sociological theories of time are both empirically and theoretically unsustainable and more importantly, why they need to be funked up/with. Through his study of a youth center in Minneapolis, Mahadeo provides examples of Black youth constructing alternative temporalities that center their lived experiences and ensure their worldviews, tastes, and culture are most relevant and up to date. In their stories exists the potential to stretch the sociological imagination to make the familiar (i.e., time) strange. Funk the Clock forges new directions in the study of race and time by upending what we think we know about time, while centering Black youth as key collaborators in rewriting knowledge as we know it.
An engineering tool is described for calculating pressures and loads at high-speed water entry which is simple to use, inexpensive to exercise and applicable to a wide variety of geometries. A simplified potential model is used which replaces the water's free surface with an effective planar surface that is positioned using an empirical parameter available in the literature for a wide variety of shapes. To confirm predictions, calculations are compared to experiment for the oblique water entry of spheres, cones, disks, and cusps. Surface pressures agree well with measurement reflecting both the model geometry and location on the model. The calculated drag and lift exhibit close agreement with experimental values, particularly prior to the peak loads. At later times the shape of the hydraulic cavity must be taken into account and an approximate procedure for doing this is described. A computer code listing and sample computer runs are provided as well as instructions for using the code.
