Excerpt from Chestnut Oak in the Southern Appalachians In the' valley counties of Virginia, in Maryland, and in northeast ern West Virginia the chestnut oak is principally small second growth. The bodies of old timber are small, have been heavily culled, or are at a great distance from means of transportation. On account of the strong demand for both bark and small-sized timber in this region Second growth is usually cut as soon as it is large enough to be merchantable. Both lumbering and bark peeling have been im portant industries in this section for many years and the diameter limit of cutting is smaller than elsewhere.
