In the summer of 1978, the B-52's conquered the New York underground. A year later, the band's self-titled debut album burst onto the Billboard charts, capturing the imagination of fans and music critics worldwide. The fact that the group had formed in the sleepy southern college town of Athens, Georgia, only increased the fascination. Soon, more Athens bands followed the B-52's into the vanguard of the new American music that would come to be known as "alternative," including R.E.M., who catapulted over the course of the 1980s to the top of the musical mainstream. As acts like the B-52's, R.E.M., and Pylon drew the eyes of New York tastemakers southward, they discovered in Athens an unexpected mecca of music, experimental art, DIY spirit, and progressive politics--a creative underground as vibrant as any to be found in the country's major cities. In Athens in the eighties, if you were young and willing to live without much money, anything seemed possible. Cool Town reveals the passion, vitality, and enduring significance of a bohemian scene that became a model for others to follow. Grace Elizabeth Hale experienced the Athens scene as a student, small-business owner, and band member. Blending personal recollection with a historian's eye, she reconstructs the networks of bands, artists, and friends that drew on the things at hand to make a new art of the possible, transforming American culture along the way. In a story full of music and brimming with hope, Hale shows how an unlikely cast of characters in an unlikely place made a surprising and beautiful new world.

“We’re roommates with benefits,” I offer. “Taking advantage of our mutual attraction for a mutually beneficial arrangement. For the summer.” Donovan When my honeymooning best friend asks me to abandon my beloved Manhattan to house sit for him in Rosedale, Connecticut, I plan to use my small-town summer to finish my unfinishable play. Until it turns out the house was double-booked, and I suddenly have a roommate for the summer. Honestly, Beck’s not so bad—he’s either sunning in a Speedo or baking cookies that taste like my childhood—but how can I get any work done with that kind of distraction? Beck After dropping out of law school, I need to figure out my next act, but I’d rather procrastinate by the pool while house sitting for my cousin. I wasn’t expecting company, but I’m happy to share, especially since Donovan is as hot as the pavement in July. He seems to be into me, too, but I don’t do one-time hook-ups and he’s definitely not in the market for a boyfriend. So we make a deal. Two months. Roommates-with-benefits. No strings. But as summer wears on, our arrangement feels more like a relationship than some of the relationships I’ve been in, and it’s clear I’m not getting out of this with my heart intact. I’m not only falling in love with Donovan, I’m also falling in love with Rosedale. Will I be able to leave Rosedale, and Donovan, behind? Cool for the Summer is a stand-alone, slow burn, roommates-to-lovers, summer fling story with a dash of cookie baking and plenty of sweet and steamy small-town goodness perfect for fans of Lucy Lennox and Riley Hart.

Two sociologists reveal how small towns in Middle America are exporting their most precious resource—young people—and share what can be done to save these dwindling communities In 2001, with funding from the MacArthur Foundation, sociologists Patrick J. Carr and Maria J. Kefalas moved to Iowa to understand the rural brain drain and the exodus of young people from America’s countryside. They met and followed working-class “stayers”; ambitious and college-bound “achievers”; “seekers,” who head off to war to see what the world beyond offers; and “returners,” who eventually circle back to their hometowns. What surprised them most was that adults in the community were playing a pivotal part in the town’s decline by pushing the best and brightest young people to leave. In a timely, new afterword, Carr and Kefalas address the question “so what can be done to save our communities?” They profile the efforts of dedicated community leaders actively resisting the hollowing out of Middle America. These individuals have creatively engaged small town youth—stayers and returners, seekers and achievers—and have implemented a variety of programs to combat the rural brain drain. These stories of civic engagement will certainly inspire and encourage readers struggling to defend their communities.
Falling for your secret no-strings fling is never a great idea—but it’s even worse when she’s your best friend’s sister. Returning to Misty Harbor to film a new season of Sawyer’s Cove is as close to a vacation as Nash Speedwell is going to get. Between acting in a big-budget historical epic series, raising money for charity, and doing endless press tours, he barely has time for his other gig as a singer-songwriter. He’s excited to return to the role that made him a star—and he’s even more excited to be near Mimi Orlando. Mimi is more than the big sister of Nash’s best friend and a librarian with a wild streak — for years, every time he’s visited Misty Harbor, Nash has found his way to Mimi’s bed. Casual hookups with Nash are all Mimi Orlando wants—or at least that’s what she tells herself. When Nash suggests their relationship could be more than a series of one-night stands, she freaks. She dyes her hair every week—if she can’t commit to a color, how can she commit to a relationship? But no one inspires Nash like Mimi, and no one has tempted Mimi out of her safe single life besides Nash. Can he convince her to take a chance on an overworked actor who’s too scared to perform his songs live? Can he face his own fears and finally allow their relationship to Take a Bow? Take a Bow is a steamy, stand-alone, full-length brother's best friend romance in the Sawyer’s Cove: The Reboot series, where Hollywood meets small-town New England. Sawyer's Cove: The Reboot is perfect for fans of Pippa Grant and Meghan Quinn. Sawyer’s Cove: The Reboot Twelve years after being canceled, a beloved teen drama gets the green light for a reboot—and the show’s once and future stars upend lives in the small seaside town where it’s filmed.
