Strategic Asia 2004?05: Confronting Terrorism in the Pursuit of Power examines the U.S.-led war on terrorism and assesses its impact for the grand strategies of major Asian powers. Confronting Terrorism in the Pursuit of Power is the fourth edition in the Strategic Asia series, and this year's volume is composed of five country studies, four regional studies, and four topical studies.Individual country studies analyze the United States, China, Japan, Korea, and Russia. Regional studies cover Central, South, Southeast, and Southwest Asia. The four topical studies address how broader transnational issues impact regional, political, economic, and security dynamics. Topics for this year's program include: energy security in Asia, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, alternative futures for North Korea, and science and technology trends in Asia. All chapters examine the short- and long-term implications for U.S. interests in Asia, and aim to sharpen the ability of U.S. policymakers to craft effective and credible strategies toward the region.

The emergence of the People's Republic of China on the world scene constitutes the most significant event in world politics since the end of World War II. As the world's predominant political, economic, and military power, the United States faces a particularly significant challenge in responding to China's rising power and influence, especially in Asia. Offering a fresh perspective on current and future U.S. policy toward China, Michael Swaine examines the basic interests and beliefs behind U.S.-China relations, recent U.S. and Chinese policy practices in seven key areas, and future trends most likely to affect U.S. policy. How can a developing, democratic and predominantly Muslim country like Indonesia manage its foreign relations, while facing a myriad of security concerns and dilemmas in the increasingly complex post-Cold War international politics, without compromising its national interests and sacrificing its independence? Approaching this problem from the vantage point of the Indonesian foreign policy elite, this book explores the elite's perceptions about other states and the manner in which these shape the decision-making process and determine policy outcomes. The combined qualitative and quantitative research strategy draws on a unique series of in-depth interviews with 45 members of the Indonesian foreign policy elite that included the country's (present and/or former) presidents, cabinet ministers, high-ranking military officers, and senior diplomats. Among all state actors, Indonesian relations with the United States and China are the highest concern of the elite. The leaders believe that, in the future, Indonesia will increasingly have to manoeuvre between the two rival powers. While the United States during George W. Bush's presidency was seen as the main security threat to Indonesia, China is considered the main malign factor in the long run with power capabilities that need to be constrained and counter-balanced.
